History
Previously, the governor’s palace was another building, which during the Italian colonization really was the residence of the Italian governor and which was built in 1899 by Fernando Martini , the first Italian governor of Eritrea in Asmara (now it is the Presidential office in Asmara ). The building, which is sometimes called “Gibi”, became the Museum of Asmara at the time when Eritrea was part of Ethiopia , and the governor’s (Ethiopian governor’s) residence was then moved to the building now called the governor’s palace.
The building of the “governor’s palace”, which now houses the city’s municipality, was erected in the 1930s in the typical fascist style (called Italian Littorio ), and its central “tower” was then decorated at the entrance of the “ fascia ” ( Fasci ).
