Early life, education, and military career

Lord Spencer was born on January 24, 1924 [1] in London ( Paddington area). The only son of Albert Spencer, 7th Earl of Spencer (1892-1975), and his wife, Lady Cynthia Hamilton (1897-1972).

He was educated at Eton , Royal Military College at Sandhurst, and Royal Agricultural College . From birth to the death of his father in 1975, he was known among his family and friends as Johnny Elthorpe.

Lord Spencer served as captain in the Royal Scottish Regiment of Grey , in 1944-1945 he participated in the Second World War . Mentioned in a military dispatch. From 1947 to 1950, John Spencer served as adjutant to Lieutenant General Sir Charles Willoughby Norry, 1st Baron Norry , then Governor of South Australia. [2]

Politics and the Royal Service

John Spencer served as adviser to the county of Northamptonshire ( 1952 ), high sheriff of the county of Northamptonshire (1959) and justice of the peace in Norfolk ( 1970 ) [2] . He also served as the stable king of King George VI (1950-1952) and Queen Elizabeth II (1952-1954) [3] . In 1954, he was awarded the Royal Victorian Order [2] .

From 1924 to 1975, John Spencer held the title of courtesy - Viscount Elthorpe [4] . On June 9, 1975, after the death of his father, Albert Spencer, 7th Earl of Spencer , he inherited the count title and paternal seat in the House of Lords .

Family life

On June 1, 1954, John Spencer married his first marriage to Francis Ruth Roche (January 20, 1936 - June 3, 2004), the youngest daughter of Edmund Maurice Burke Rocher, 4th Baron Fermoy (1885-1955), and Ruth Sylvia Gill (1908-1993) . The wedding ceremony took place at Westminster Abbey under the direction of Bishop Norwich Percy Herbert . The queen and other members of the royal family attended the ceremony [5] . The spouses had five children:

In April 1969, John Spencer and Frances Spencer divorced. Later, in 1969, Francis Spencer remarried Peter Shand Kidd (1925-2006).

On July 14, 1976, Lord Spencer remarried to Raine McCordale, Countess of Dartmouth (September 9, 1929 - October 21, 2016), the only daughter of Captain Alexander McCordale and writer Barbara Cartland . From 1946 to 1976, her first husband was Gerald Humphrey Legge, 9th Earl of Dartmouth (1924-1997).

Lord John Spencer died of a heart attack March 29, 1992 at the age of 68 years [6] .
