Spencer, Charles, 6th Earl Spencer

Charles Robert Spencer, 6th Earl Spencer ( October 30, 1857 - September 26, 1922 ) [1] - British aristocrat , court and liberal politician from the Spencer dynasty . He was elected three times as a deputy of the House of Commons (1880–1885, 1885–1895, 1900–1905), served as vice chamberlain of the royal court (1892–1895) and Lord Chamberlain (1905–1912). Great-grandfather of Diana, Princess of Wales .

Early life and education

Charles Spencer was born on October 30, 1857 in St. James , Westminster. [2] The only son of Frederick Spencer, 4th Earl of Spencer (1798–1857), and his second wife, Adelaide Seymour (1825–1877), daughter of Horace Bosham-Seymour and granddaughter of Lord Hugh Seymour .

On December 27, 1857, after the death of Frederick Spencer, 4th Earl of Spencer, his titles and possessions were inherited by his eldest son from his first marriage, John Pointz Spencer, 5th Earl of Spencer (1835-1910). Charles was educated at Harrow School and Trinity College in Cambridge [3] .

Political career

Charles Spencer was elected to the House of Commons from North Northamptonshire (1880–1885), Middle Northamptonshire (1885–1895, 1900–1905). He lived on the Dallington Hall estate in Northamptonshire . In 1898, he unsuccessfully tried to run for parliament from Hartford [4] . In 1892, Charles Spencer became a member of the Privy Council of Great Britain [5] . In the same 1892, he received the position of vice chamberlain in the government of William Gladstone [6] . Charles Spencer held this position until 1895. [7] From 1900 to 1905 - “whip” (organizer) of the liberal party in the House of Commons of Great Britain [8] .

On December 19, 1905, the title of Viscount Elthorpe from Great Brington in Northamptonshire was created for Charles Spencer [9] . This allowed him to become Lord Chamberlain in the liberal government of Sir Henry Campbell-Bannermann .

On August 13, 1910, after the death of his 74-year-old childless older brother, John Spencer, 5th Earl of Spencer , Charles Spencer inherited the title of Earl of Spencer and took his brother's place in the House of Lords. Charles Spencer held the position of Lord Chamberlain until 1912 . In 1908 - 1922 - Lord Lieutenant of Northamptonshire .

Cavalier of the Grand Cross of the Royal Victorian Order (1911) [1] and Cavalier of the Order of the Garter (1913) [10] .

Lord Spencer was also awarded a large number of foreign awards: Cavalier of the Order of Danebrog (Denmark), Royal Order of St. Olav (Norway), Order of the North Star (Sweden), Order of the Rising Sun (Japan), Order of the White Eagle (Serbia), Order of the Red Eagle ( Prussia) and the Order of Carlos III (Spain). He was also an honorary major , and later an honorary colonel of the 4th Volunteer Battalion of the Northampton Regiment .

Family

On July 23, 1887, at the Church of St. James ( Piccadilly ), Lord Spencer married the Honorable Margaret Bering (December 14, 1868 - July 4, 1906), daughter of Edward Baring, 1st Baron Revelstock (1828-1897). The couple had six children:

  • Albert Edward John Spencer, 7th Earl Spencer (May 23, 1892 - June 9, 1975)
  • Lt. Captain Hon. Edward Cecil Robert Spencer (May 20, 1894 - February 14, 1928), died unmarried
  • Lady Lavinia Emily Spencer (September 29, 1899 - May 9, 1955), husband - Luke Henry White, 4th Baron Annali (1885-1970)
  • Captain Hon. George Charles Spencer (August 15, 1903 - October 1982), 1st wife Barbara Blumenthal (d. 1978), 2nd wife Kathleen Henderson (d. 1968)
  • Lady Alexandra Margaret Elizabeth Spencer (July 4, 1906 - May 26, 1996), husband - Hon. Henry Montague Douglas-Hume (1907-1980), son of the 13th Earl of Hume. He is the author of A Spencer Childhood, published in 1994 .

The 64-year-old Lord Spencer died on September 26, 1922 at his home in St. James (London).
