Irma is a classic hurricane of the “Cape Verde” type [1] [2] [3] , which formed on August 30, 2017 near the islands of Cape Verde when a strong tropical wave exits from continental Africa. Due to favorable conditions, a hurricane only 24 hours after formation developed into a category 2 hurricane. September 5, Irma turned into a hurricane of the highest, 5th category of danger . The wind speed reached 297 km / h (the speed of gusts of wind - 360 km / h), which made Irma the strongest Atlantic tropical cyclone since the time of " Wilma " in 2005.

During the existence of Irma, for the first time since 2010, the situation was repeated when there were three hurricanes in the Atlantic Ocean: Katya , Irma, and Jose [4] .

At least 134 people became victims of the hurricane [5] [6] [7] [8] [9] [10] [11] . Material damage is estimated at more than 60 billion US dollars.

On the night of September 8–9, the hurricane reached the northern coast of Cuba and moving tangentially along the coastline of the island, caused significant destruction in its northeastern provinces [13] . Havana was flooded. At the same time, the strength of the hurricane decreased to the 3rd category, but later again increased to the 4th category. According to media reports, the hurricane lifted 7-meter waves on the Cuban coast, and the speed of wind gusts reached 250 km / h [14] .

On the morning of September 10, a hurricane reached Florida . State authorities announced the evacuation of 6.3 million people (more than a quarter of the state’s total population) [14] . President Donald Trump has declared a “major natural disaster” regime in Florida [15] . September 10-11, a hurricane swept along the west coast of the state, causing severe damage to the Florida Keys archipelago and flooding in Miami and other cities. The strength of the "Irma" at the same time decreased from the 4th to the 1st category. The hurricane broke up on September 12th.
