History

The company's first projects were orders from Epyx and Strategic Simulations (SSI) corporations for porting games from 8-bit to 16-bit systems, such as Commodore Amiga and Atari ST . The company's first success in the PC gaming world came from the Eye of the Beholder port ( 1990 ), a role-playing game licensed under Dungeons & Dragons , commissioned by SSI. In the future, the company could afford to develop games to your liking.

Their first own project was the Mars Saga game, developed by order of Electronic Arts and published in 1988 . Westwood Games were also published by Infocom and The Walt Disney Company . In 1992, the company was renamed Westwood Studios and sold to Virgin Interactive .

In 1992, Westwood released the first of the well-known real-time strategies, Dune II: The Building of a Dynasty . Other Westwood titles of the time are the quest The Legend of Kyrandia and the RPG Lands of Lore .

Three years later, RTS came out of their pen - Command & Conquer ( 1995 ) - which brought the company the greatest commercial success in its history. Sales of the series in its entire history exceeded 35 million copies, which is noted in the Guinness Book of Records .

Command & Conquer, Kyrandia, and Lands of Lore spawned numerous sequels.

In 1998, Westwood was taken over by Electronic Arts (EA), which led to massive layoffs of employees who disagree with the new management’s policies. One of Westwood’s latest titles, Command & Conquer: Renegade , which combined elements of a first-person shooter (FPS) and real-time strategy (RTS) , was not a commercial success. In March 2003, Westwood Studios was closed, and its staff was transferred to work in the studio EA Los Angeles [1] . Following the closure of Westwood Studios, Electronic Arts continued to develop games based on the Command & Conquer series.

The latest Westwood Studios game was the massive multiplayer online role-playing game Earth & Beyond . In total, Westwood has created more than fifty games.

Shortly after the closure of Westwood Studios, its former employees, who did not want to stay at Electronic Arts, founded Petroglyph Games .

In March 2012, Luis Castle handed over a collection consisting of the company's games to the video game museum ( ICHEG ) [2] .
