New consonant music

New consonant music is a term that is sometimes used to describe the musical compositions of a number of composers, mostly European. To a certain extent, representatives of this trend are close to musical minimalism and, in particular, to spiritual minimalism , as well as furnishing music ; American minimalists, including Steve Reich , Michael Naiman , and Philip Glass, are among the pioneers of consonant music.

The term comes from the French " consonance " - "consonance". He appeared in the 1980s, as a response, according to a number of composers, to the widening gap of misunderstanding between the audience and the authors of musical compositions. Representatives of the direction decided to try to return to the classical perception of music, recognizing the attempts of avant-garde authors to find new musical solutions. Thus, the new consonant music was partly close to postmodernism , but at the same time it does not possess some of its features, such as self-irony [1] . With minimalism, the direction is brought closer by the fact that the followers of new consonant music proclaimed, like the minimalists, the need for cleanliness in art, the uselessness of piles; they also justify a certain stinginess and simplicity of the musical means necessary for the author to convey his feelings. If philosophically new consonant music and minimalism are really very close, then musically they are different: new consonant music, unlike minimalism, can be both atonal and tonal ; she does not have any compositional features, they only demand from the authors to be extremely honest to their audience.

"This is not commercial, affordable music, written for mass consumption, but not music for the elite, exceptional," - so describe it on the official website of the community [2] . And journalist “Posters” Alexey Munipov, during a dialogue with Pelecis, called representatives of new consonant music a marginal community of composers [3] . Georgs Pelecis himself, in turn, positively responds about this direction. He notes that consonance is not just an acoustic category, but an aesthetic one [4] .

In Belgium, New Consonant Music publisher works, which brings together composers who are close to this direction, and also publishes musical compilations. Several Russian composers cooperate with the publishing house, for example, Oleg Payberdin [5] , Olga Viktorova [6] .
