Biography
Dominic Martin Dupuis was born on February 8, 1767 in the city of Toulouse.
In 1791, he joined the national guard and in 1793 stood out in the republic’s war against the coalition, fighting bravely, under the command of General Brunet ( fr. Gaspard Jean-Baptiste Brunet ), on the Austrian border. In the same year, Dupuis was promoted to general, but after that he was arrested on charges of campaigning against the Convention . Demoted by the court, he soon rejoined the army and fought in the campaign of 1795 with honors under the leadership of General Lagarpe [3] .
During the reorganization of the French army in 1796, Dominic Martin was appointed by the command to the post of head of the 32nd half-brigade (see 32e régiment d'infanterie ), which under his leadership became famous in the army for its legendary courage. For the differences in the battles of 1796 at Dego, Caldiero and Arcole, he was promoted to general for the second time, but refused this rank, not wanting to part with his 32nd semi-brigade [3] .
In Napoleon’s Egyptian campaign, Dupuis was particularly distinguished in the Battle of the Pyramids in 1798. Produced in the same year for the third time as a general, he was appointed Cairo governor and was killed by Arabs on October 21, 1798, during a . [3]
Upon learning of his death, Napoleon Bonaparte exclaimed: " I lost a friend, the army - a brave soldier, and France - one of my noblest defenders " [3] .
In memory of Dupuis, a bust was installed in the Toulouse Town Hall .
