A doctor by training, specialized in radiology . In the military year of 1944, he was the editor-in-chief of the student magazine “Xekinima” (“Start”). The first collection of his poetry, The Four Seasons, was published in 1945.
Left sympathies prompted him to join the pro-communist Resistance , for which, during the Civil War, he was eventually sentenced to death. Arrested in 1948 for participating in a student movement at Thessaloniki University , Anagnostakis spent several years in prison. 1949 was the year when he was simultaneously expelled from the Communist Party of Greece and sentenced to death by a military tribunal. However, the sentence was quashed, and Anagnostakis was released in 1951.
He influenced the next generation of poets. His poems have been awarded several national awards in Greece and put to music by contemporary musicians.
