When Trey Parker and Matt Stone were just starting to develop the idea of the upcoming TV show South Park , they already wanted to use Jesus as a character; he plays an important role in the two short films preceding the series, under the general title “The Spirit of Christmas, ” and it was decided that he would transfer to the series. In the second part of The Spirit of Christmas, Jesus Against Santa, he appears in his current serial appearance. When asked whether the jokes about God and Jesus are anti-Christian, Parker and Stone say no; they simply believe that humor can be based on absolutely any thing [2] [3] .
Jesus is voiced by one of the creators of the series, Matt Stone [4] .
Content
Character
Based on the historical and legendary Christian messiah, Jesus in the series is shown as a whole corresponding to Arian , and not traditional Christian ideas about him; he is only the son of God , but not God, has a number of powers, including foresight, healing and the ability to resurrect. The characterization of his abilities varies in different series - so, according to the episode " Super Best Friends ", some of his miracles are fictions that actually do not require any abilities, and in the series " Wonderful Easter Story " it is said that he acquires abilities only after death.
Jesus in the series is calm and not very confident, very good with everyone around him, a little sad character. However, sometimes he behaves in the same style as the other characters in the series. Whereas in episode “ Damien ” Jesus is shown to be unsure of himself and incapable of a serious battle, in other episodes (“ Kill Santa Claus ”, “ Wonderful Easter Story ”, “ Imagination, episode III ”) Jesus is free to use weapons and has fighting skills. In the feature film, Big, Long, and Uncut , you can see that Jesus is a soldier in the US Army. Jesus is a member of the superhero group of religious prophets “ Super Best Friends ” who fight evil (except for the Buddha who does not believe in the existence of evil); also, Jesus, as one of the wisest fictional characters, along with Aslan , Luke Skywalker and others enters the supreme council of Imagination .
“Jesus and His Pals”
Before his second death, Jesus hosted his own television show, Jesus and His Pals, on cable television for South Park. Depending on the episode, its format varies - usually these are just Jesus' answers to phone calls, but sometimes he receives guests in the studio, although he does not differ in his talent for interviewing. The show is not very popular in the city, although even the Catholic priest father Maxi in the episode “ Damien ”, seeing Jesus, says: “Look, this is a guy from a local TV show!” In the episode “ Mexican Grimp Frog from Southern Sri Lanka ” Jesus show comes in into the ranked competition with Jimbo and Ned 's Hunt and Kill program. The producer forces Jesus to change the format of the show, making it more flashy, and ultimately organizes Stan , Kyle , Cartman and Kenny 's fight with Jimbo and Ned on the air. When Jesus realizes that he is not happy with what is happening, he returns to the old format, sending the producer to hell.
The satire, the essence of which is this show, is that Jesus Christ appears on earth for the second coming , but no one will recognize him. As a result, Jesus has to conduct this cable television show to convey his thoughts to people. But even in this capacity, most of the city’s residents ignore it [5] [6] .
Jesus and Pussy Riot
At the end of the Applause Bracelet series, Jesus shows off a T-shirt that says “Free Pussy Riot” and the crowd supports it. [7] . After the series was released, Vadim Dengin, a State Duma deputy from the LDPR party, criticized the series extremely critically, saying that this episode humiliates the Russian Orthodox Church , some politicians have proposed to completely ban the broadcast of the series in Russia . [8] [9] . In the same series, it is shown that Jesus did not suffer for human sins at all, but in fact was at that time in a state of drug high. It is noteworthy that this aspect was not mentioned by politicians and Vadim Dengin.
