Creation History
The I-5 fighter , manufactured by aircraft factory No. 21 , was the main fighter of the Soviet Air Force of that time. To train the pilots on this plane, the R-5 plane was used. There was a need to create on the basis of the I-5 two - seat training aircraft . Initially, for this purpose, it was planned to purchase the Fiat fighter from Italians. But then the creation of a training aircraft was entrusted to Gorky designers. Permission to remake the fighter was given by the Air Force Chief of the Red Army Jacob Alksnis .
The initiative group was headed by B.V. Kupriyanov. It also included Borovkov and Florov. The plane was built in a month. On August 5, 1934, test pilot Pavlushov made his first flight on it. The aircraft was named UTI-1 and was launched into serial production . About twenty aircraft were produced. Management noted the success of the creative team. The next task for him was the development of the I-207 fighter.
