History

Originally built as a military airport in 1938 , in 1945 it was taken under control by the British authorities . In 1954 , Betriebsgesellschaft was founded, and the airfield at Schwechat replaced Vienna Aspern Airport as the country's main airport. At this time there was only one runway , which in 1959 was increased to 3,000 meters. Construction of the new airport building began in 1960 . In 1972 a second runway was built.

The airport has hosted the Olympic teams twice, since Austria has twice hosted the Winter Olympics . John Paul II also used the airport during his visits to Austria. On December 27, 1985, the El Al ticket office came under attack from Palestinian terrorists .
