The Danube Canal ( Donau Canal , German: Donaukanal ) is the sleeve of the Danube (not an artificial channel, despite the name) in Vienna [1] . It branches off from the main channel in Döbling and merges again in Simmering , thus forming an island from two districts of Vienna : Brigittenau and Leopoldstadt . The Danube Canal is 17.3 km long.

Unlike the Danube itself, the Danube Canal borders the Inner City , which makes up the center of Vienna. In this area, the Vienna River flows into it.
In German, the name Kanal (used since about 1700) evokes associations with open sewers . Therefore, the Danube Canal was tried several times to rename unsuccessfully, for example, in Kleine Donau (Small Danube). Sometimes, however, the canal is called the Vienna Sleeve [2] .
