Wee Jung Jin

Wi Jung Jin ( September 28, 1917 , Penang , Malaysia - June 5, 2005 , Singapore ) is a Singaporean statesman. Acting President of the city-state of Singapore (from March 27, 1985 to March 29, 1985). Lawyer. Chief Justice of Singapore - Chairman of the Supreme Court (from January 5, 1963 to September 27, 1990). The doctor is right.

Biography

Born in the family of an entrepreneur. Until 1935 he studied at the Penang school (Free School), then studied law in England . In 1938 he graduated with honors from St. John’s College of Cambridge University , receiving the prestigious McMahon Prize. He was awarded a bachelor 's degree . Then he was admitted to the British Bar Association, specializing in the law of torrential settlements, including Penang , Malacca and Singapore , administrative units of the British East India Company (1826-1867), and then the British Colonial Office (1867-1946).

He returned to his homeland in Penang during the Japanese occupation of Singapore (1942-1945) and continued his legal career in the UK, and worked as a lawyer . Since 1946 he lived in Singapore.

August 15, 1957 became a judge, being the first Asian and Singaporean lawyer and the youngest lawyer to be appointed as a judge in the Supreme Court of Singapore [1] . Later, on January 5, 1963, he was appointed President of the Supreme Court of Singapore. His appointment to the post of chief justice of Singapore marked the end of the centuries-old tradition of appointing the British chief judges [2] . Wee Jung Jin remained in the chair of the chief judge for 27 years until retiring in 1990, becoming the longest serving judge in the post not only in Singapore, but also throughout the Commonwealth of Nations .

Since 1973, he was the first chairman of the Presidential Council on Minority Rights and remained in this position for 18 years.

He was the first president of the Singapore Law Academy (since 1988).

From 1962 to 2002 - President of the Singapore Golf Association. [3]

After retiring, he worked as a legal consultant and director of United Overseas Bank (until 2000).

Died of lung cancer complications.
