Biography

Born on January 11, 1936 in the city of Rastede ( Lower Saxony , Germany ). The sixth child and fourth son of Nikolaus, the titular duke of Oldenburg (1897-1970), and his first wife, Princess Elena Waldeck of Pyrmont (1899-1948) [2] . On his paternal side, he was the grandson of Frederick Augustus II , the last reigning Grand Duke of Oldenburg, and Princess Elizabeth Alexandrina of Mecklenburg-Schwerinsk, and on the maternal side, Prince Friedrich Waldeck of Pyrmont and Princess Batilda Schaumburg-Lippe. The younger brother of Anton-Gunther, the titular Duke of Oldenburg (1923-2014).

His grandfather, Frederick Augustus II , the last Grand Duke of Oldenburg (1900-1918), was overthrown in November 1918 at the end of World War I. In 1931, after the death of Frederick Augustus II, his son Nikolaus became the titular duke of Oldenburg , and in 1970 his eldest son Anton-Gunther (1923-2014) became the new head of the Oldenburg Great Duke's House. The current head of the Oldenburg Duke's family is Christian Oldenburg , the nephew of Frederick Augustus.

Marriages and children

Frederick Augustus of Oldenburg was twice married. His first wife was Princess Maria Cecilia of Prussia (born May 28, 1942), daughter of Louis Ferdinand, Prince of Prussia (1907-1994), (second son of Wilhelm, German Crown Prince ) and his wife, Grand Duchess Kira Kirillovna Romanova (1909-1967) . The civil wedding ceremony took place in Berlin on December 3, 1965 , and the church ceremony the next day [2] [3] . He worked as a specialist in the field of agriculture [3] . This was the first Hohenzollern marriage in Berlin since 1913 [3] .

Frederick Augustus and Maria Cecilia had three children in a marriage (son and two daughters):

  • Duke Paul-Vladimir Nikolaus Louis-Ferdinand Peter Max Karl-Emich of Oldenburg (born August 16, 1969, Lübeck ), married since 2001 to Maria del Pilar Mendes de Vigo-i-Leuvenfeld-Wertheim-Rosenberg (born October 20, 1970, Madrid), granddaughter of Karl, 8th Prince Levenstein-Wertheim-Rosenberg. They have four sons and one daughter:

  • Duchess of Bibiana Maria Gertrude Alexandra of Oldenburg (born June 24, 1974, Oldenburg ). She married Peter Dorner in 2004 (born February 19, 1972). They have two daughters, Ksenia and Riksa, as well as son Alex.

On November 23, 1989, Frederick Augustus and Maria Cecilia divorced [2] . On February 9, 1991, Friedrich August of Oldenburg in Rüdenhausen remarried to Countess Donate zu Castell-Rüdenhausen (June 20, 1950 - September 5, 2015) [2] , daughter of Siegfried, 4th prince of zu Castell-Rüdenhausen (1916-2007) and Countess Irenen Solms-Laubach (1925-2006), the widow of Prince Louis Ferdinand of Prussia . Donata died in Traunstein on September 5, 2015 after a long illness [4] .
