Formation History

The 23rd Guards Rifle Division was transformed from the 88th Rifle Division by order of the NPO of the USSR No. 78 of March 17, 1942 [1] [2] .

On April 17, 1942, the division was assigned a new numbering, the rifle regiments were renamed: 426th — to 63rd Guards, 611th — to 66th Guards, 758th — to 68th Guards, 401th Artillery Regiment renamed to the 49th guards artillery regiment.

Participation in hostilities

Period of entry into the army: March 17, 1942 - December 14, 1944, December 31, 1944 - May 9, 1945 [3] .

In March 1942, units of the division defended the occupied lines in Karelia from Lake Superior Black Lake to Mount Gankashvaara. On the night of April 20, the division was replaced by the 263rd Infantry Division and, after rest, made a march to defile the lakes of Lower and Upper Black. On April 24, the division went on the offensive during the Kesteng operation and, after stubborn battles, went to the southern shore of Lake Yarosh-Järvi. For three days, the division overcoming steep ascents and descents, snow cover and lack of roads passed 18 kilometers. From April 28 to May 5, the division fought to capture the highway in the Izba area. On May 14, the division was withdrawn to the army reserve. On July 18, parts of the division replaced the 263rd Infantry Division and took up defense in the strip: Figured height, eastern slopes of Mount Gankashvaara, the northern shore of Lake Big Largi-Järvi.

On the night of October 16, 1942, units of the division began loading at the Louhi station and the 34 km railway line. On October 26, the division unloaded and concentrated in the city of Ostashkov . Having completed several night marches, the division reached the Kalinin area by dawn on November 24th. On November 28, the division went on the offensive and, after little success, gained a foothold on the line reached - the Anutka River.

In the winter of 1943, the division participated in the Demyan offensive operation .

From February 1 to March 30, 1944, the division participated in the Starorussko-Novorzhevskaya operation during which on February 24 it played a decisive role in the liberation of the city and the most important railway junction, the Bottom . In pursuit of the enemy, units of the division reached the Velikaya River where they seized a bridgehead and subsequently secured themselves on the west bank of the river.

In April and May 1944, the division defended the line of defense it occupied: Dancing - Alferovo, where it waged heavy battles and participated in private offensive operations. On July 17, 1944, the division crossed the Velikaya River in the New Way area and broke through the enemy’s defenses on the western bank of the river. During the six-day battles, the division contributed to the capture of the city of Ostrov and entered the territory of the Latvian SSR .

From September 14 to October 13, 1944, after breaking through the defenses on the western bank of the Ema-Väike-Yigi River, the division began to pursue the enemy and waged heavy battles for the liberation of the city of Riga . In November, participated in the liquidation of the Courland boiler .

On December 24, 1944, the division was loaded into echelons and relocated by January 10, 1945 to the Yavorek region, from where it was sent to Fandsburg. From February 2 to 25, 1945, the division defended itself at the Lanken- Landeck border. From March 4 to 12, she participated in the East Pomeranian operation on the outskirts of the Stettin Bay, as a result of capturing the cities of Gollnov and Stepenitz. On March 23, units of the division took up defense along the eastern bank of the Oder River in the Schwedt area.

Since April 16, breaking through the defenses, forced the Oder River in the Kinitz region, took part in the Berlin offensive . On April 21, units of the division broke into the suburbs of Berlin, Blankenburg, where they surrounded the German troops destroyed in street battles. From May 2 to 9, 1945, after the surrender of the Berlin garrison, the division carried out garrison service in the area of Wedding .

On June 4, 1945, after a three-day march, the division went to the Gentin area, where, having replaced parts of the 5th Infantry Division, the 63rd Guards Rifle Regiment began to carry out guard service along the eastern bank of the Elba River . After the withdrawal of the Allied forces from the western bank of the Elba River, the division units were redeployed to the Calverde region, where the 68th Guards Rifle Regiment began to conduct watch service at the line: Elba-Weser Canal, Weferlingen .

Based on the directive of the Supreme High Command Headquarters No. 11095 dated May 29, 1945, the 23rd Guards Rifle Division, as part of the 12th Guards Rifle Corps of the 3rd Attack Army , entered the Group of Soviet Occupation Forces in Germany [4] .
