Legislative Election in The Gambia (2017)

Parliamentary elections in the Gambia were held on April 6, 2017 [1] . They became the first parliamentary election after the inauguration of Adama Barrow as president and led to a landslide victory for the United Democratic Party , which won 31 of 53 seats.

Election System

53 members of the National Assembly are elected in single-member constituencies through a majoritarian electoral system .

Preparing for the election

The European Union (EU) sent a European Union (EU) election observation mission to the Gambia in preparation for the March 13 parliamentary elections at the invitation of the Independent Electoral Commission. The mission was officially launched on March 22, 2017 , and is led by chief observer Miroslav Poche, who is a Czech member of the European Parliament . The mission initially consisted of six international election experts based in Banjul and 14 long-term observers deployed throughout the Gambia. Closer to election day, the mission will deploy short-term observers, as well as a delegation of seven members of the European Parliament. In total, the mission included about 50 observers from EU member states, as well as from Canada , Norway and Switzerland [2] . On April 3, the EU sent 14 short-term observers to the Gambia [3] .
