The Council of the Nation ( Arabic: مجلس الأمة , French Conseil de la nation ) is the upper house of the Algerian parliament. It consists of 144 members, 2/3 of whom are elected by indirect vote and 1/3 of which are appointed by the president [2] .

Abdel Kader Bensalah was elected Chairman of the Council of the nation on July 2, 2002 , re-elected January 11, 2007 and January 10, 2008 . Zohra Drif was elected to the post of deputy chairman of the Council of the nation on September 10, 2002 , re-elected on March 7, 2007 and March 8, 2008 .
Composition
The Council of the Nation consists of 144 members, of which:
- 96 are elected by indirect suffrage;
- 48 are appointed by the President of Algeria .
Elections
There are 48 double constituencies (two mandates per constituency), corresponding to the number of administrative units in Algeria .
Elections are held by a majority of votes in two rounds by a group of voters consisting of elected by popular assemblies (about 15,000 members).
A candidate for the Council of the Nation must be at least forty years old. The term of office is six years. The Council is updated every year and a half.
