Laurence Joseph ("Larry") Dorr ( born Laurence Joseph Dorr , born September 18, 1953 ) is an American botanist, a specialist in the taxonomy of the Malvaceae family .

Biography
Born September 18, 1953 in Boston . In 1971 he entered the University of Washington in St. Louis . In 1974 he took academic leave, during which he walked the entire Appalachian trail , collected plants in Alaska and the Yukon , and then continued his studies in St. Louis.
In 1976, he graduated with honors from the University of Washington with a bachelor's degree in earth and planetary sciences. For some time he worked in the Missouri Botanical Garden . In 1980, he received a master's degree in botany from the University of North Carolina .
In 1983 he defended his Ph.D. dissertation at the University of Texas under the supervision of Professor Beryl Brintnall Simpson . From 1983 to 1986 he traveled to Madagascar with the support of the Missouri Botanical Garden. Upon returning to the United States, since 1987, Dorr has been a lecturer in the Department of Biology at the University of Texas.
For several years, Dorr worked at the New York Botanical Garden , from 1988 to 1991 he traveled to the northern part of the Andes .
Since 1991, Lawrence Dorr has been working at the Department of Botany of the Smithsonian Institution in Washington. Processed several genera for the multivolume summary of Flora of North America . Dorra's research interests include the taxonomy and evolution of malvaceae, the heather taxonomy, and the history of botanical research in Madagascar.
Since 1984, Dorr has been married to Fox Barnett (born 1959), also a Ph.D. in biology and an employee of the Department of Botany at the Smithsonian Institution.
