The Sagittarius Stream ( Sagittarius Stream ) is a complex, extended structure consisting of stars and circling the Milky Way in a nearly polar orbit. The stream includes stars, due to the tidal effect of the Milky Way cut off from the dwarf elliptical galaxy in Sagittarius , which has been in the process of merging with the Milky Way galaxy for billions of years.
Opening
The assumption of the presence of this stellar flow was expressed in 1995 by Donald Linden-Bell after analyzing the distribution of globular clusters in the Milky Way. [1] In general, the structure was discovered by Newberg et al. (2002) [2] and Mayevski et al. (2003) [3] according to 2MASS and SDSS surveys. In 2006, Belokurov and colleagues [4] discovered that the stream of Sagittarius has two branches.
Connection with a spiral structure
The destruction of a large stellar structure that invaded the Milky Way in the recent past could create oscillations similar to sound waves within a spiral structure. The effect of such oscillations is observed in the form of layers alternating vertically with a higher and lower concentration of stars. At present, the Sagittarius stream is oriented relative to these layers in such a way [5] that the dwarf elliptical galaxy in Sagittarius is its most likely progenitor.
