Bournemouth 1939 is an international chess tournament organized by the British Chess Federation on the eve of the outbreak of World War II . It coincided in time with the Chess Olympiad in Buenos Aires , respectively, the organizers were not able to invite everyone whose participation they had originally hoped for. Only ex-world champion Max Euwe came from world stars (because he did not go to Buenos Aires with his national team), Grandmaster Salomon Flor , who lived in the USSR, and veteran Jacques Mises . For the above reason, there were also no participants in the English Olympic team . Euwe won the tournament. Flor was half a point behind him, sharing 2-3 places with the Austrian master Ernst Klein , who had recently moved to England.
