Biography
Born in Oxford on May 28, 1911 . Mother - amateur botanist Margaret Clark Gillett (1878-1962). The godson of John Christian Smuts . He studied at Leighton Park School in Reading , already in 1928 participated in the John Hutchinson botanical expedition to South Africa. Upon his return, he studied German for some time in Munich , in 1929, together with his parents, Smuts and Hutchinson again traveled to South Africa.
From 1930 to 1934 he studied at Cambridge University , where he graduated with a master's degree. In 1932 he participated in the Border Commission of British Somalia - Ethiopia , collected many herbarium specimens, and compiled a sketch of the region's vegetation.
Since 1937, Spector was married to Gertrude.
In 1941 he was drafted into the army, participated in the battles of Imphal and Kokhim in India.
In 1946 he was appointed botanist of the Iraqi Department of Agriculture. In 1949 he returned to England, where he worked at Kew under the leadership of Edgar Milne Redhead . In 1952-1953 he traveled along the border of Kenya and Ethiopia.
In 1964, Gillett was appointed chief botanist of the East African Herbarium in Nairobi, and worked in this position until 1972. Due to health problems, he returned to England in 1984.
He died on March 17, 1995 .
