Azerbaijan at the 2017 Summer Universiade

Azerbaijan at the XXIX World Summer Universiade in Taipei represented 19 athletes in four sports: track and field athletics, judo, taekwondo and weightlifting [1] . As a result, the Azerbaijani team won three gold, one silver and four bronze medals [2] , taking 24th place [3] .

Competition Results

Judo

Azerbaijan at the Universiade was represented by three judokas. These were Telman Veliyev (73 kg), Firudin Dadashev (90 kg) and Zelim Kotsoev (100 kg) [4] . The first medal was won by Zelim Kotsoev, who, having defeated four rivals, reached the final against the Japanese judoka Kentaro Iida. Having earned a “waza-ari” mark in extra time, Kotsoev won the Universiade gold medal [5] .

Firudin Dadashov, having defeated judokas from Colombia and Italy, soon lost to the Japanese, whose entry into the finals allowed Dadashov to continue the competition in comforting fights. Here he defeated athletes from the Czech Republic, Latvia and Kazakhstan, having won a bronze medal, which became the second medal for the Azerbaijani team at the Universiade [6] .

Telman Veliyev, on the other hand, began with victories over representatives from India, Poland and Kazakhstan. However, in the semifinals he lost to the judoka from France, and in the duel for third place he lost to the Korean athlete, taking fifth place [7] .

Athletics

In athletics, Azerbaijan was represented by two athletes. In the long jump, the country was represented by Nazim Babaev . Jumping in the qualification at 16.32 meters, Babaev took third place and reached the final. In the final, in the first attempt, Babaev jumped 17.01 meters and took first place [8] . In the hammer throw, Anna Skidan performed unsuccessfully.

Taekwondo

Azerbaijan represented 12 athletes in taekwondo competitions. These were Gashim Magomedov (54 kg), Ali Mammadov (58 kg), Magomed Mammadov (63 kg), Aykhan Tagizade (68 kg), Said Guliyev (74 kg), Milad Beigi Kharchegani (80 kg), Payam Ogaz (87 kg) ), Radik Isaev (+87 kg), Safie Polat (49 kg), Patimat Abakarova (53 kg), Yarpak Yerish (57 kg) and Farida Azizova (+ 57 kg) [9] .

On the first day of the competition, Aykhan Tagizade, defeating the representatives of France, Great Britain, Spain and Armenia, reached the final, where he lost to Boris Krasnov from Russia, taking the silver medal, which became the third medal for the national team as a whole. Yarpak Yerish was disqualified at the start, and Magomedov was defeated in the second fight [10] .

On the second day of the competition, Milad Beigi Kharchegani, having won five times, became the winner of the Universiade, and Ali Mammadov, Safie Polat and Farida Azizova lost the second bout [11] . On the third day of the competition, Said Guliyev and Radik Isaev took the day. Both of them reached the semifinals, where after losing, they won bronze medals. It is noteworthy that the current Olympic champion Radik Isaev lost to the 20-year-old Russian athlete Rafael Ayukaev with a score of 8:36 [12] .

On the last day of taekwondo competitions, Patimat Abakarova, Magomed Mammadov and Payam Ougaz fought for medals. Mammadov, the bronze medalist of the 2017 World Cup, won three fights, however, having suffered a defeat in the semifinals, he took only a bronze medal. The bronze medalist of the 2016 Olympics, Abakarova lost in the first match, and Ougaz lost in the quarter-finals [13] .

Weightlifting

In weightlifting, the country was represented by Magomed Mammadli in the weight category up to 62 kg and Azer Mammadli in the weight category +105 kg. Azer Mammadli with the result of 370 kg took the last 12th place [14] , and Magomed Mammadli with the result of 256 kg won the 7th place [15] .
