Wanda Alfred Joanna Wilkomirska ( Polish: Wanda Alfreda Joanna Wiłkomirska ; January 11, 1929 , Warsaw - May 1, 2018 , Melbourne ) is a Polish violinist , composer and music teacher.

Biography

The daughter of violinist Alfred Vilkomirsky and pianist Dvoira (Dorota Ludwiki) Temkina (1901-1986) [3] from a Jewish merchant family from Kalish [4] [5] , the half-sister of Kazimierz Vilkomirsky . Started making music with her father. She graduated from the Higher School of Music in Lodz with Irena Dubiska ( 1947 ), while still a student she played the second violin in the Szymanowski Quartet created by Dubiska. Subsequently, she improved her skills at the Budapest Academy of Music with Ede Zaturecki , in Warsaw with Tadeusz Vronsky and Eugene Uminskaya, in Paris with Henryk Schering . At the turn of the 1940-50s. won high places in various international competitions (in particular, second place at the Second International Competition named after Wieniawski , 1952 ). Since 1959 she was a soloist of the Warsaw Philharmonic, since 1961 she has extensively toured Europe and America. She also performed as part of the family Trio of Vilkomirskys, with her brother Kazimierz and sister Mary.

She played in chamber ensembles with such famous musicians as Marta Argerich , Gidon Kremer , Misha Maisky , Daniel Barenboim . She has toured in more than 50 countries of the world, performed with many symphony orchestras under the direction of such conductors as Otto Klemperer , Leonard Bernstein , Kurt Mazur , Pierre Boulez , Zubin Meta , Sir John Barbirolli , Carlo Giuliani , Wolfgang Zavallisch , Eugen Jochum and others . She was the first performer of many works of Polish composers, including Krzysztof Penderetsky , Tadeusz Bird .

In 1981 , after declaring martial law in Poland, she emigrated from the country, from 1983 to 2018 a professor at the Higher School of Music in Mannheim, from 1999 to 2018 the Sydney Conservatory , from 2001 to 2018 the Australian National Music Academy in Melbourne .

Personal life

She was the wife of a famous Polish politician and journalist Mechislav Rakovsky .
