Biography
Born in 1922 in Veliki-Bane (the community of Shentternay ) in a peasant family. Worked before the war assistant baker. In the spring of 1942 he joined the partisans, from April 1, 1942, he served in the ranks of the Goryansky partisan company. Member of the Communist Party of Slovenia since 1942.
After the consolidation of the Goryanskaya Company with the 2nd Belokrani Company, the Belokrani Detachment appeared, and in early July 1942 the 1st Slovenian proletarian strike brigade named Tone Tomšić appeared, in which Kotar continued his service. He participated in all the battles of the 1st Slovenian Brigade (including in the campaign of the 14th Slovenian Division against Styria). In mid-1943 he was promoted to captain, and after the German offensive was disrupted in March 1944, he was appointed deputy commander of the 1st battalion of the brigade. He was repeatedly wounded [1] .
On April 21, 1944, Martin Kotar was killed in the town of Vrkhpol-pri-Kamnik during the battle against the German troops: they went to the rescue of the garrison of the fortress of Chmartno in the Tukhinskaya valley, which was besieged by the partisans of the 1st and 6th Slovenian brigades [2] .
On September 13, 1952 [3] by the decree of the Presidium of the National Assembly of the Federal People's Republic of Yugoslavia, he was posthumously awarded the order and title of the People’s Hero of Yugoslavia.
