Vicariate is led by priest John Pitsura [3] . Divine services are conducted in Ukrainian and Romanian [4] and, unlike Romanian churches, the Julian calendar is used [1] .

History

By the middle of the 20th century, Ukrainians in Romania traditionally professed Greek Catholicism . In 1948, the Romanian Greek Catholic Church was banned and its parishes became part of the Romanian Orthodox Church. A separate Vicariate was formed from the Ukrainian parishes with a center in the city of Sighetu Marmatiei (Sighet). It lasted until 1952, when Ukrainian deanery was transformed with its center in the commune of Poenile de Sub-Munte (Russkaya Polyana). This deanery was subordinated to the Diocese of Cluj and lasted until 1990. In 1990, Vicarism was restored and divided into 2 deaneries (Sighet and Lugoj ) [1] .

As of 2009, there are 32 parishes, 3 monasteries (2 women’s and 1 man’s) in Vicarism. The number of parishioners is estimated at 52 thousand people [4] .
