Mortal Kombat 3 introduces new characters, but there are no popular characters from previous games. Later in 1995, the Ultimate Mortal Kombat 3 update was released, where there are significantly more characters present than in Mortal Kombat 3 . In 1996, Mortal Kombat Trilogy was released for home consoles and PCs, with several more characters added.

Story

Shao Kang , who lost to Liu Kang in the battle (MK2 events) and is tired of the defeat of his servants in tournaments against earthlings, begins to set in motion a plan that began 10,000 years ago. On his orders, the Shadow priests, led by Shang Zong, were supposed to revive the former queen of Kan - Sindel , who died almost immediately after Kan's capture of Eden. According to Kahn’s plan, Sindel was to resurrect not in the Outer World, but on Earth, which would give Kan the right to open a portal to the Earth Kingdom and capture the planet, bypassing the rules of the Mortal Kombat.

When Sindel resurrected in the earthly kingdom, Shao Kahn opened a portal to Earth and demanded his queen. His actions led to the fact that the Earth became part of the Outer World and the souls of billions of people instantly became the property of Shao Kahn. Only a few people survived all over the planet, thanks to Ryden , who protected their souls during the invasion. Ryden is a thundering god, and he instructs the survivors to stop Kahn, but he himself has no right to intervene because of his status as Defender of the Earth Kingdom. Ryden has no power in the Outer World, and the Earth has partially become part of the Outer World.

To destroy the selected warriors, Shao Kahn sends fighter squads to Earth led by Motaro . Ryden's defense extends only to the souls of the chosen warriors, not to their bodies, which means that before destroying Shao Kahn, earthlings should try to survive in battles with the servants of the Emperor.

Mortal Kombat 3 follows Mortal Kombat 2 , and occurs at the same time as Ultimate Mortal Kombat 3 and Mortal Kombat Trilogy , which were MK3 updates. The next new game in the series was Mortal Kombat 4 .

Gameplay

Mortal Kombat 3 has complicated the battle system from previous games in the series. One of the innovations was the “Run” button along with the “Run” energy bar. The ability to run into the game was introduced due to criticism from fans who thought that players who preferred defensive tactics had more advantages over players who preferred to attack. A strip of energy “Running” was spent during running and combo, and then quickly replenished.

The second innovation was “preprogrammed combos ”. Such combos are a sequence of button presses pre-programmed by developers. After at least one hit hits the opponent, all other hits in the combo become unblockable. Some combos end with an uppercut or other blow, which throws the opponent into the air and makes it possible for juggling .

For players with different levels of training, the “Choose your Destiny” screen was presented, which allowed you to select a certain number of opponents.

For the first time, some levels have become partially interactive. The opponent could be thrown out with an uppercut through the ceiling and continue the battle in another arena. This feature also allowed you to change the sequence of levels in the game. It was possible to throw an opponent into another arena with the usual uppercut and uppercut, which was part of the combo. Kun Lao’s “Spinning Whirlwind” technique also allowed the opponent to be thrown into another arena. However, if the uppercut was the last blow in the round, then the opponent did not fly out to the next arena.

The various types of finishes that appeared in MK2 (Fatality, Friendship, Babality) returned to the third part of the series. Also, a new finishing game appeared in the game - Animality ( Rus. Brutality ), which has been rumored for a long time. During the carrying out of Animality, the victorious enemy turned into an animal to kill his opponent. Another innovation - Mercy ( Russian. Mercy ). The winning player could give his opponent a small percentage of health and continue the fight with him. Mercy can only be done in the third round, and it must be done for Animality. As in MK2, background finishing can be applied at some levels.

Another new idea implemented in MK3 is combat codes ( English Kombat Kodes ). These are six-digit codes, various combinations for which you need to type on the Versus screen (a screensaver with the image of opponents before the battle) in the two-player mode. Codes allowed you to change the gameplay, fight with hidden fighters and bosses or display hidden messages from developers. In addition to the usual combat codes, ten-digit Ultimate Kombat Kodes were presented in the game, which had to be entered after the end of the game in single player mode. After entering the correct code, it became possible to play for the secret fighter of this part - the cyborg Smoke . Game room owners could reset this code using the diagnostic menu or DIP switches inside the arcade machine .

The overall style of the game is very different from previous games in the series. Unlike MK1 and MK2 , in which Oriental motifs were strong, in MK3 Western and modern themes prevail. The arenas of the game are located in modern urban locations, three new characters are cyborgs, and the traditional design of some characters ( Sub-Ziro , Kano , Jax ) has been completely or strongly changed. The game looks much darker than the second part, and uses a darker and less saturated color palette. The characters look more realistic (unlike MK2 , in which the fighters looked slightly “cartoony”). Many arenas in the game are created for the first time using rendered 3D graphics. The changes also affected the soundtrack - the oriental motifs that prevailed in the previous parts of the game were replaced by modern music.

Characters

New Characters

  • Cyrax (Sal Divita) - a cyber ninja from the Lin Quay clan, sent to kill Sub-Zero;
  • Sector (Sal Divita) - a cyber ninja from the Lin Quay clan, sent to kill Sub-Zero;
  • Kabal (Richard Divicio) - former member of the Black Dragon clan;
  • Night Wolf (Sal Divita) - North American Indian shaman;
  • Sindel (Lea Montelongo) - the resurrected Queen of Eden, controlled by Shao Kahn;
  • Shiva (model, animated by the method of single-frame shooting) - a woman from the Shokan race, Sindel's bodyguard;
  • Stryker (Michael O'Brien) is an anti-riot officer.

Old characters

  • Jax (John Parrish) - Major, US Special Forces;
  • Kano (Richard Divicio) - a member of the Black Dragon clan, which helps Shao Kahn in capturing the Earth;
  • Liu Kang (Eddie Won) is the champion of the Mortal Kombat, who after the Shao Kang invasion of the Earth turned out to be the main target for the fighter squads of the Emperor;
  • Kun Lao (Anthony Marquez) is a Shaolin monk who, along with Liu Kang, trained a new generation of fighters to participate in the tournament;
  • Sonya Blade (Kerry Hoskins) - Lieutenant of the US Special Forces;
  • Sub-Zero (John Turk) - an escaped ninja from the Lin Quay clan, the younger brother of the original Sub-Zero ;
  • Shang Tsun (John Turk) is the chief sorcerer of Emperor Shao Kang.

Sub-boss and boss

  • Motaro (model animated by the method of single-frame shooting) - Army General Shao Kahn;
  • Shao Kahn (Brian Glynn, voiced by Steve Ritchie) - Emperor of the Outside World.

Secret characters

  • Smoke (Sal Divita) - a cyber ninja from the Lin Quay clan, a former ally of Sub-Zero (a secret fighter discovered with the help of Ultimate Kombat Kode);
  • Noob Saibot (Richard Divicio) - Senior Sub-Zero, who became a ghost. It turned out that you can play for him in the Sega Genesis version through the Endurance Mode, you need to press U + Start and press Start again, and you need to do this very quickly (though most of the characters come across other characters including bosses if you couldn’t open the secret, you need to use the button Reset will only take a lot of time) so that the character icon is not visible. However, some of his movements and actions lead to a hang of the game.

Arenas

Some arenas in MK3 have background finishing moves.

  • The Subway (Metro) - Enemy knocks down a train
  • The Street (Street)
  • The Bank
  • The Rooftop (Roof)
  • The Balcony
  • The bridge
  • Soul Chamber
  • Bell Tower (Belfry) - the enemy breaks through the floors of several floors and falls on spikes
  • Kombat Temple (Temple of Battle)
  • The Graveyard (Cemetery)
  • The Pit III (Pit 3) - the enemy falls on rotating blades
  • Noob's Dorfen (Noob Saibot Refuge) - Used only in battle against Noob Saibot
  • Hidden Portal - Used only in battle against Smoke
  • The Rooftop after Khan death (Roof after the death of Shao Kahn) - similar to a simple “Roof”, but a stream of souls rushes from the tower in the background into the sky. It is used if you miss the battle with Shao Kahn in the Sega version using the code.

In MK3, the opponent can be thrown by an uppercut to another level:

  • The Subway → The Street
  • The Bank → The Rooftop
  • Soul Chamber → The Balcony

Despite the fact that the game became a hit, some MK fans did not like the fact that the traditional and popular characters of the series, such as Raiden, Johnny Cage, Reptile and Scorpio, were excluded from the game. In fact, this was the first game in the series in which there were no multi-colored ninjas (Sab-Ziro is not considered, since his appearance was completely changed compared to previous games in the series). This approach to the series was not popular with fans of the game, and so the ninja warriors returned to the Ultimate Mortal Kombat 3 update. Also, many fans did not like the new battle arenas, which were streets, the subway, and other usual places for cities, unlike the arenas from the first two parts of the game, in which there were strong fantasy and oriental motifs.

Some characters from past games in the series were played by new actors, as the actors who played in the previous installments sued Midway. Ho Sung Pak (Liu Keng), Philip Ann (Shan Tsun), Elizabeth Maleki (Sonya), Katalin Zamiar (Kitana, Milina and Jade) and Dan Pesina (Johnny Cage, Scorpio, Sub-Ziro, Reptile, Smoke, Noob Saibot ) did not participate in the creation of MK3. Instead, the new actors played the characters of Liu Kang (Eddie Won), Sony Blade (Kerry Hoskins), Shan Tsun and Sub-Ziro (both were played by John Turk). In Ultimate Mortal Kombat 3, all male ninjas were played by John Turk, all female ninjas were played by Becky Gable . Johnny Cage in Trilogy was played by Chris Alexander.

Carlos Pesin, who played Raiden in previous parts of the game, did not take part in the work on MK3, due to his participation in the creation of the game Tatoo Assassin , although he was still a Midway employee. Raiden returned to Mortal Kombat Trilogy , where character sprites from MK2 and MK1 were used.

Ported

The MK3 was ported to all the major consoles of the time: Sega Genesis / Mega Drive, SNES, and PlayStation. The game has also been ported to Game Boy and some other portable gaming systems.

In order for the MK3 to fit on the cartridge for the Game Boy, the game had to be cut down a lot. Only nine of the fifteen fighters (Kano, Sonya, Sub-Ziro, Cyrax, Sector, Shiva, Sindel, Kabal and Smoke) and only five levels got into this version. This port also did not have a combo, Motaro, and no other items other than Fatality and Babality. Shao Kang uses his tricks from MK2. Despite the fact that the game received a rating of M (Mature), this version of MK3 did not include as much cruelty and violence as other versions of the game, although Fatality was saved with the burning of the opponent. The MK3 graphics on the Game Boy are considered very good, with smooth animation and great attention to detail, unlike previous MK ports on this console.

There was also a MK3 version for Game Gear, which was never released in the United States. The game was released only in Europe and Japan and is a rarity. A new, packaged version of the game can be found at online auctions for $ 90. This version is almost the same as the version for Game Boy, but with several significant differences: there is blood and cruelty, the game is not black and white, but color, it also has Nub Saibot as a hidden character. There was also a version for the Sega Master System, almost identical to the version for Game Gear, although this port was only released in Brazil by Tech Toy, distributors of Sega products in that country.

There are two versions of MK3 for PC. The first was the version for MS-DOS, which is a unique MK3 port unlike any other version of the game. This port is very close in its gameplay to the arcade version, and also has good animation, sound effects and graphics. This version also has a secret audio track in which the announcer reads the MK3 story back and forth. The second version of the game for the PC was the version for Windows, which was essentially a direct MK3 port with the Sony PlayStation.

In the Japanese version of the MK3 game for the PlayStation, the announcer reads the plot of the game and biographies of characters in Japanese.

MK3 for Windows and PlayStation became the basis for the Ulimate Mortal Kombat 3 version on Sega Saturn.

MK3 also appeared in the collections of Midway Arcade Treasures 2 (GameCube, PlayStation 2, Xbox), Midway Arcade Treasures Deluxe Edition, ((PC) this version includes a movie about creating the game), Midway Arcade Treasures: Extended Play (PSP).
