Biography

Almost nothing is known about the early years of Anna Risi's life. She lived as the wife of a simple shoemaker in the Trastevere artisan area on the west bank of the Tiber in Rome. Thanks to her burning Mediterranean beauty, Anna often posed for artists, including the English painter Frederick Leighton in the late 1850s. In the spring of 1860, Anna was noticed by the German painter Anselm Feuerbach , who had been living in Rome since 1855. Anna Risi, possessing an aristocratic profile, white skin and classic "Roman" facial features, was the ideal of beauty of that time, and also ideally suited Feuerbach as a model for his paintings on historical and mythological themes.

For Feuerbach's sake, Anna left her husband and child and began living with the artist. For six years of their relationship, Feuerbach in love painted at least 28 portraits of his beloved, nicknamed Nunn, and his images of Medea , Iphigenia , Miriam and Bianchi Cappello have undoubted portrait resemblance to Anna Risi.

In 1865, Anna left Feuerbach to a wealthy Englishman, but the new relationship did not last long. Three years later, in distress, Anna asked Feuerbach for help, but was rejected by him. Little is known about her later life; she obviously continued to pose for foreign artists. The young artist Albert Gertel , who was under the influence of Feuerbach and also lived in Rome, left a sketch of Nanna in 1866. German artists Ferdinand Keller and Nathaniel Schmitt also wrote Nunn.
