Origin
Lucius Calpurnius was descended from the plebeian clan Calpurnia , whose representatives considered Calpa , the mythical son of the second king of Rome, Numa Pompilius, to be his ancestor ( patrons of Emilia , plebeians Pinaria and Pomponia also erected their genealogies) [1] [2] . Branch Calpurnia Besty elevated to the consulate in 111 BC. er The antique historian Wilhelm Druman suggested that Bestia-tribune was the grandson of Bestia-consul , who wore the same premeno [3] .
Biography
Sallust and Appian called among supporters of Lucius Sergius Catilina in 63 BC. er Lucius Calpurnia Bestia , elected as a tribune of the people for the next year [4] [5] [6] . According to the plan of the conspirators, this politician, after Catiline headed the army in Etruria , was to convene a popular gathering and speak at it against Mark Tullius Cicero ; this performance would be a signal for arson of the city and the beginning of the massacre [7] [5] . The conspiracy was uncovered, Catiline and many of his followers died, but Bestia escaped execution. During the tribune he energetically attacked Cicero, accusing him of extrajudicial punishment of Roman citizens; Lucius's ally was his colleague Quintus Cecilius Metell Nepos [8] [9] [10] [11] .
In connection with the events of the 50-40s BC. er the surviving sources mention Lucius Calpurnius Bestia , who, according to Robert Broughton, was one person with a tribune 62 BC. er [12] , and according to Wilhelm Drumann [13] and Friedrich Munzer , should be considered a completely different person [14] . This nobile at one point held the position of Edoula [15] , was a friend of Mark Celius Ruf , Mark Tullius Cicero [16] and Publisher Sestia . In 57 BC Oe., when Sestius, who was trying to achieve the return of Cicero from exile, was wounded during street riots, Bestia saved his life [17] . In 56 BC. er Lucius Calpurny was prosecuted for bribing voters; Cicero became his defender, but nevertheless the jury convicted [17] . Perhaps the accuser in this trial was Mark Tseliy Ruf [18] [19] .
Later, Lucius Calpurnius was reinstated. It is known that in 44-43 years BC. er he belonged to the "party" of the Caesarians and supported Mark Antony . The beast claimed the consulate of 42 BC. er [20] ; hence the researchers conclude that he previously held the post of praetor, or at least claimed it. It was during the election of praetor for 56 BC. er Lucius could have allowed violations of the law, because of which he was convicted [14] . In this case, he was edilom in 59 BC. er [12]
After 43 BC er The beast is not mentioned in the preserved sources [14] .
Family
Pliny the Elder mentions a certain Lucius Calpurnia Bestia , who was married several times and was suspected of poisoning his wives [21] ; perhaps, we are talking about the people's tribune of 62 BC. er [14] Presumably the son of the rostrum was Calpurni , who passed by adoption into the Sempronium clan and became in 34 BC. er Consul-effect [18] .
