Story
In the winter of 1831, a strange incident occurred on the lands of the Sabay clan in the province of Etizen . The fishing village of Kurosaki was completely cut out. Only the young woman of Oriha, who was absent at the time of the massacre, survived. The Samurai Mogubei of the Sabay clan became an unwitting witness to the killing of fishermen and their families.
The Tokugawa clan has financial problems. In order to solve them, the treasurer of the clan Rokugo Tatevaki engaged in piracy, capturing gold from the ship of the shogun. And he decided to get rid of witnesses - ordinary fishermen. Magobei is shocked by what happened, especially since the treasurer of Tatevaki is his childhood friend. He promises not to report what happened in exchange for Tatewaki’s oath of never repeating this.
Mogubey leaves service and becomes a wandering ronin until one day he finds out that Tatewaki has violated his oath and is about to repeat the atrocity: seize a ship with gold and kill innocent peasants. Determined to destroy the criminal plans of Tatevaki and his loyal subjects, with the help of people loyal to him (among whom Orich has gone astray), having experienced great moral and physical tests, he enters into an incredible battle with an insidious enemy.

... Before us again is the story of a hero disappointed in samurai traditions (the excellent role of Tatsuya Nakadai), who is forced to fight with his old friend (always perfect Tetsuro Tanba) - for the latter, the desire for power justifies any crimes. Here, the emphasized anti-authoritarian position of the director is again expressed and again we see masterfully staged fights, but in Goyokin, Ghosh experimentes with rhythm, artificially slowing it down between battle scenes and giving the picture (as opposed to the realism of previous works) a sense of some irreality, a viscous beautiful and bright sleep (the color scheme of the operator Kozo Okazaki is bewitching). The sophisticated installation of the final duel in the snowy expanses with the performance of drummers, whose faces are hidden under the masks of mythological monsters, adds to the film's spectacularity, but also moves away from the realism of Gosha's early paintings.
