Origin
Born March 28, 1895 in Brno ( Kingdom of Bohemia , Austria-Hungary). The eldest son of Archduke Joseph Augustus of Austria (1872-1962) and Princess Augusta Maria Louise of Bavaria (1875-1964), daughter of Leopold of Bavaria (1846-1930) and his wife, Austrian Archduke Gisela (1856-1932). On the maternal side - the great-grandson of the emperor of Austria-Hungary, Franz Joseph I.
He studied at a secondary school in Budapest , then studied law at the university . After that he studied at the cadet school and the Military Academy of Louis .
Military career
Since 1915, Archduke Joseph Franz of Austria served as an ensign in the 7th German Hussar Regiment of William II. A year later, he received the rank of senior lieutenant . For the courage shown in the battle of Putna in Romania, he received the rank of captain . In 1919, the Archduke was arrested by supporters of the Hungarian Soviet Republic . With the help of the English royal family, he was released and received permission to remain in Hungary. Since 1927 he was a member of the upper house of parliament, studied economics and received a doctorate.
Since 1944, Archduke Joseph Franz of Austria has lived outside Hungary. On September 5, 1957, the 62-year-old Archduke Joseph Franz died in Carcavelos in Portugal. His remains were buried in a cemetery in Feldafing ( Bavaria ).
Marriage and children
On October 4, 1924, Archduke Joseph Franz of Austria at Sibillenort Castle married Princess Anna of Saxony (May 4, 1903 - February 8, 1976), the youngest daughter of the last king of Saxony, Frederick Augustus III and Archduke Louise of Austria, Princess of Tuscany [1] . The couple had eight children:
- Archduke Margit of Austria (August 17, 1925 - May 3, 1979), husband from 1944 Alexander Kech (March 23, 1914 - June 30, 2008), who called himself Prince of Erba- Odescalca , Prince of Monteleone .
- Archduke Ilona of Austria (April 20, 1927 - January 11, 2011), husband in the years 1946-1974, George Alexander, Duke of Mecklenburg (August 27, 1921 - January 26, 1996)
- Archduke Anna Theresa of Austria (April 19, 1928 - November 28, 1984)
- Archduke Joseph Arpad of Austria (February 8, 1933 - April 30, 2017), married since 1956 to Princess Maria von Levenstein-Wartheim-Rosenberg (born November 6, 1935). Eight children
- Archduke Istvan Dominic of Austria (July 1, 1934 - October 24, 2011), married since 1971 to Mary Anderl (born April 27, 1942). Spouses had a son and daughter
- Archduke Maria King of Austria (born August 27, 1938), 1st husband since 1959 Ernst Keys July 12, 1922), divorce in 1974, 2nd husband since 1988 Joachim Christ (April 3, 1919 - January 15, 2005)
- Archduke Geza of Austria (born November 14, 1940), 1st wife since 1965 Monica Decker (born December 1, 1939), divorce in 1991, 2nd wife since 1992 Elizabeth Jane Kunstadter (born July 13, 1966) . From the first marriage - three sons, from the second marriage - a daughter.
- Archduke Michel of Austria (born May 5, 1942), married since 1966 to Princess Christiane von Levenstein-Wertheim-Rosenberg (born September 18, 1940). Spouses have two sons and a daughter.
