Origin

Born March 28, 1895 in Brno ( Kingdom of Bohemia , Austria-Hungary). The eldest son of Archduke Joseph Augustus of Austria (1872-1962) and Princess Augusta Maria Louise of Bavaria (1875-1964), daughter of Leopold of Bavaria (1846-1930) and his wife, Austrian Archduke Gisela (1856-1932). On the maternal side - the great-grandson of the emperor of Austria-Hungary, Franz Joseph I.

He studied at a secondary school in Budapest , then studied law at the university . After that he studied at the cadet school and the Military Academy of Louis .

Military career

Since 1915, Archduke Joseph Franz of Austria served as an ensign in the 7th German Hussar Regiment of William II. A year later, he received the rank of senior lieutenant . For the courage shown in the battle of Putna in Romania, he received the rank of captain . In 1919, the Archduke was arrested by supporters of the Hungarian Soviet Republic . With the help of the English royal family, he was released and received permission to remain in Hungary. Since 1927 he was a member of the upper house of parliament, studied economics and received a doctorate.

Since 1944, Archduke Joseph Franz of Austria has lived outside Hungary. On September 5, 1957, the 62-year-old Archduke Joseph Franz died in Carcavelos in Portugal. His remains were buried in a cemetery in Feldafing ( Bavaria ).
