History
Plots of land on the present Gagarinskaya street at the beginning of the XIX century belonged to the princes Gagarin . In 1819, one of the sites where the mansion was soon built was sold to the provincial secretary, Maria Semenovna Alekseeva. A new house was built on the site of a building that burned down during the fire of 1812 [2] [3] .
Currently, this building is known as the house of the Decembrist Pyotr Nikolayevich Svistunov , who settled in it in 1867 upon his return from penal servitude . Former head of the St. Petersburg branch of the Southern Society and a member of the Northern Society , Svistunov bought this building and lived in it until 1879 , when the house was sold [2] .
The Decembrists Mikhail Bestuzhev , Matvey Muravyov-Apostol and Andrey Rosen , who also returned from the Siberian exile, visited his mansion. In 1878, the house on Gagarinskaya Street was visited by Leo Tolstoy , who at that time was working on the novel "Decembrists" [1] .
After the owner’s death, the house was repeatedly resold, and in 1912 it was acquired by the famous Soviet architect Alexei Schusev . With him, an apartment and a workshop were arranged in the house, in which he designed the People's Commissariat and the Mausoleum [2] .
In 2005-2007, the dilapidated house was restored with the funds of an investor who was building a modern office building behind the mansion. In 2008, the office complex of architects Mikhail Khazanov, Dmitry Razmakhnin, Grigory Mudrov was completed. At the moment, both buildings are part of the business center complex [2] .
Architecture and Interior
The wooden mansion was built according to the “exemplary” design in the Empire style . The facades of the building after restoration have retained their historical appearance. The decor reflecting the style of the era was restored: the parquet was restored, the walls were painted, the tiled stove was reassembled. On the ceilings and walls of the rooms was recreated pseudo - Gothic stucco molding [2] [1] .
