Description

The total length of representatives of this genus ranges from 25 to 70 mm. Males in the breeding season develop spikes on the chest and spiky protrusions on the thumb and second finger. Color yellow, brown or mesh [2] .

Lifestyle

In view of the rare discovery of most species, lifestyle has not been sufficiently studied. Representatives of the family were found in a variety of biotopes - humid forests, wetlands, rocky shores, near high mountain water bodies. Most likely, they are tolerant to environmental changes [3] .

Distribution

The range extends from southern Brazil to northern Paraguay , Chile and Argentina [4] .

Classification

As of October 2018, the family includes 3 genera and 26 species [4] [5] :

  • Alsodes Bell, 1843 - Shipogruds ( 19 species )
  • Eupsophus Fitzinger, 1843 ( 6 species )
  • Limnomedusa Fitzinger, 1843 - Limnomedusa ( 1 species )
  • Limnomedusa macroglossa (Duméril & Bibron, 1841) - Limnomedusa
