The son of Gottfried II von Sponheim and Adelheida von Zayn.
Between 1223 and 1237 under the section with the brothers Johann and Heinrich he received the Front Sponheim and in 1247 part of the county of Zayn (the former possession of his mother). After Henry married the heiress of the lord Heinsberg, he abandoned his share in Spongeheim in favor of Simon I, after which he had in possession 2/3 of the county.
In the elections, the German emperor supported the candidacy of Richard of Cornwall .
Wife (prenuptial contract December 6, 1240) - Margarita von Hengebach, daughter and heiress of Eberhard III von Hengebach and his wife Elizabeth Hochstaden, sister of the Cologne archbishop Konrad. Children:
- Johann I (d. 1291) - Count of Spongeheim
- Imagina (Names), husband - Walter von Geroldsek
- Henry (d. 1310), founder of the line of Sponheim-Bolanden-Dannenfels
- Johann, husband - Frederick V. Count von Leiningen.
