Biography
Alfred Pollak (real name of the actor) was born on October 20, 1916 in the German city of Koblenz . His father, Solomon Pollak, was Jewish and owned a shop. Solomon managed not to fall under the Nazi repression and survive the war safely. Alfred's mother was called Berta, and she was a Christian. The younger sister is (1920 -?). On the eve of World War II, she emigrated to Britain, where she became a very successful sculptor.
Alfred studied acting in Berlin and Vienna, but did not complete his education, as he left Germany shortly before the outbreak of World War II. According to the most probable version, Diffring left Germany in 1936 to avoid persecution by the Nazi authorities for their homosexuality - this is stated in the audio commentary to the Silver Nemesis series (1988) of the Doctor Who series. According to a less probable version, Diffring left his homeland in 1939, having left for Canada, where he was interned in 1940. The latest version seems dubious, since in the same 1940, Diffring had already played his first role (without indication in the credits) in the cinema - it was the film , shot by the British film studio Ealing Studios .
In addition to Convoy, Diffring, in the same 1940, starred in another British filmstrip, Neutral Port (also without a caption), and this was the beginning of a ten-year break in his barely begun film career. Then, from 1950 and almost until the end of his life, Diffring was filmed regularly, for 38 years (1950-1988) he appeared in 136 films and TV shows, mainly produced in Great Britain, although there are films made in Germany, the USA, France, Czechoslovakia, Yugoslavia in his piggy bank. , Austria, Italy, Switzerland and other countries.
Anton Diffring died on May 20 ( according to the tombstone on May 19 ) of 1989 in his house in the town of Shatonoi Gras in south-eastern France [5] . There were no official statements about the cause of death. Find a Grave biographer Susan Edwards claims that the actor died of cancer, and actor opinion that AIDS was the cause of his colleague's death [6] .
