The history of the city dates back to the Punic era (the state of Carthage ), namely from the oldest region of Megara. In the novel “ Salambo ” by the writer Gustave Flaubert describes a feast in the area, arranged by the military commander Hamilcar Bark for his soldiers. According to archaeologists, the name "Mars" is associated with the meaning of the city, which was a port. After the Arab conquest, a ribat was built in the city, which became not only a fortress, but also a place of formation and Sufi culture. It was in this city that on June 8, 1883, the La Mars Convention was signed between France and Tunisia, which strengthened the power of France over its protectorate.
