Ivan Brkanovich ( Croatian Ivan Brkanović ; December 27, 1906 , Shkalyari village, near Kotor , Austria-Hungary - February 20, 1987 , Zagreb , SFRY ) - Croatian composer , conductor , head of the Zagreb Philharmonic Orchestra , director of the Academy of Music in Sarajevo . President of the Society of Bosnian Composers (1950–1951) and the Society of Croatian Composers (1953–1955).

Biography

Horvat by origin. Since 1927 he lived in Zagreb . He worked in a factory, attended a music school. Since 1932 he collaborated with several magazines.

Later he studied composition at the Zagreb Academy of Music under the direction of B. Berza , F. Lhotka , F. Dugan. After graduating in 1935, he worked as a school music teacher. He continued his studies at the private conservatory Schola Cantorum de Paris in Paris .

He worked as a choirmaster in Zagreb , since 1951 - music consultant to the Croatian National Theater in Zagreb, in 1954-1957. - Director of the Zagreb Philharmonic, in 1957-1961. He was a professor at the Academy of Music in Sarajevo .

In 1983 he became a member of the Academy of Arts and Sciences of Croatia .

Creativity

Ivan Brkanovich is the author of musical works of various genres, as well as music-critical articles in which he defended the need to appeal to national material in the opera and concert repertoire.

He used national Croatian musical folklore in composing, combining folk song with professional skill and the use of modern writing techniques.
