About the album
This is the only studio album featuring vocalist Gary Cheron, and the last with bassist Michael Anthony, who was replaced in 2006 by his son Eddie Wolfgang. Work on the next album with Cherone began in 1999, but never progressed beyond recording several demos. The album also became the band's latest studio release on Warner Bros .. Next A Different Kind of Truth (2012) was released by Interscope Records .
The only significant radio hit from the album was the single “Without You,” which reached No. 1 on the Hot Mainstream Rock Tracks chart on March 7, 1998, and remained there for six weeks.
Critical reviews for Van Halen III were mostly negative. AllMusic's Stephen Thomas Erlevine said the album "suffers from the same problems as Hagar's Van Halen — lame riffs, faint tunes, and ingenuous rhythms."
The album was followed by a tour in which the group first visited Australia and New Zealand.
