Spremberg Dam

Dam Spremberg ( German Talsperre Spremberg ) - a hydraulic structure that includes the reservoir Spremberg ( German Spremberger Stausee ), which are located between the cities of Cottbus and Spremberg , to block the river Spree . The launch ceremony took place on October 8, 1965. This dam is the fourth largest in Germany in terms of area and the only large dam in Brandenburg. Thanks to the Spremberg dam, a number of problems have been solved, namely: water supply, flood control, power generation, and drainage. The area around serves as a recreation area and is a conservation area that spreads over 987 ha [1] [2] .

History

Build

Archival records in the Department of Construction indicate that between 1897 and 1933, 124 cases of devastating floods were recorded. From this information it follows that local residents in this period of time were able to harvest only five times, while all other attempts failed due to floods. Considerations for building a defensive structure in the upper and lower Spreewald became the subject of debate in the 1920s. The matter didn’t go further than discussions, since the construction of the proposed dam in this region encountered difficulties due to its geographical location and topographic features. Only in the 1950s, a lowland reservoir project was developed as an addition to the dam, which was designed to protect the area from the Spree River spill. Additionally, the issue of water supply for a coal-fired power plant was resolved. The dam, built between 1958 and 1965, together with a reservoir for the removal of heavy water from the power plant (Vorsperre Bühlow project) were recognized as an innovative achievement of their time. In 2005, repairs were carried out on the dam itself, and from 2011 to 2013, sediments were removed at the bottom of the Vorsperre Bühlow reservoir [3] . According to estimates for 2016, repair work at the facility cost 15 million euros [4] .

Due to the presence of iron particles in the waste water from the power plant, its level in the water is constantly monitored. If the permissible indicators are exceeded, measures are taken to filter and clean the bottom, as well as monitoring for changes in the surrounding plant world. The last time preventive measures were taken in 2017 and on August 16, work was continued as usual [5] .

Feature

The Spremberg Dam is 3.7 km long with a crest height of 20 m on a 2.2 km stretch. The reservoir has a length of 7 km and is designed for a water volume of more than 42.7 million km³ [6] .
