The Chuvashs of Tatarstan are settled on the right bank of the Volga, the left bank of the Kama River and in the southern and southeastern regions of the republic.
Strength
Number - 126532 (2002). For 1989-2002 it decreased by 5.8%. The republic has 19 cities, more than 20 urban-type settlements and 43 administrative rural areas. The Chuvashs live compactly in Oktyabrsky (15771 people), Aksubaevsky (14636), Drozhzhanovsky (12312), Buinsky (10293), Tetyushsky (6155), Alkeevsky (4903), Cheremshansky (4888), Almetyevsky (2599), Bavlinsky (2592) , Apastovsky (1776) and Zelenodolsky (1625 people) districts.
Resettlement
There are about 170 Chuvash villages in the republic, among them Stary Savrushi, Novoye Aksubaevo, Staraya Kiremety, Suncheleevo, Emelkino, Stary Chuvash Adam, Staraya Uzeyevo in the Aksubaevsky district, Staraya Tumba, Chuvashskoye Burnaevo, Staraya Takhtala and Boriskino, Klemeyekino, Elkementino, and Old Surkino in Almetyevsk district, Alsheevo, Runga, Chuvash Kishchaki, Big Shemyakino, Burganovo in Buinsky district, Old Ilmovo, Ubey, Chuvash Drozhzhanoe, Gorodishche and Mataki in Drozhzhanovsky district, Axumla, Elaur, Ilyutkino, Sred naya Kamyshla, Egorkino, Saldakaevo, Old Iglaykino in the Nurlat region, Cats-Novotimbaevo, Bogdashkino, Iskovo, Tonsherma, Upper Tarkhany, Chuvash Cherepanovo in the Tetyush region, Ivashkino, Karmalka, Ulyanovka, Novoe Ilmovo, Lagershan and Nizheglsky Chere in Kondrata in the Chistopol district. And in 137 villages, the Chuvash live together with Russians, Tatars, and also Mordovians. A significant number of Chuvash people live in the cities of Kazan (12457 people), Naberezhnye Chelny (12593 people), Nizhnekamsk (5780), Nurlat (4653), Bugulma (2112), Buinsk (1823), Chistopol (1399), Tetyushi (1226) and Zelenodolsk (1197). The Chuvash autonomies operate: the Chuvash national and cultural autonomy of the Republic of Tatarstan (Kazan), the Chuvash public and cultural center named after P.P. Khuzangay (Kazan), the Tetyush Chuvash national and cultural center of the Republic of Tatarstan (Tetyushi), the Chuvash national center (Bavly), Chuvash National Cultural Community (Naberezhnye Chelny), Chuvash Social and Cultural Center (Nizhnekamsk), Chuvash National Cultural Center of the Aksubaevsky District (Novoye Aksubaevo). Newspapers are published in the Chuvash language. Some official regional newspapers are duplicated in Chuvash (“Bayrak”, “Duslyk”).
