About the album
After completing the 5150 tour, Eddie Van Halen had several riffs he worked on, and Sammy Hagar “there was a bunch of texts in notebooks that I thought about and wrote, ”so they soon began work on a new album.
The name of the album contained an ironic answer to David Lee Roth's first solo album, Eat 'Em And Smile . If you read the name OU812 character by character, you’ll get the English phrase Oh You Ate One Too. The working title was Bone ', which Alex hated.
The album cover was a tribute to the album With the Beatles . She also bears a resemblance to the covers of Vincebus Eruptum (1968) albums by Blue Cheer and Red (1974) King Crimson . The back cover shows a statue of Hugo Reinhold Affe mit Schädel .
The album is dedicated to the father of Eddie and Alex, Jan Van Halen, who died on December 9, 1986 at the age of 66 years. The words “This One's For You, Pa” are written in the album booklet. Ian previously participated in the recording of the album Van Halen, Diver Down (1982), playing the clarinet in the song “Big Bad Bill (Is Sweet William Now)”.
