History
In 1568, the Margrave of Brandenburg , in connection with the need to improve the situation in the field of medicine in Cottbus, granted the privilege to organize a pharmacy to Dr. Petrus Cnemiander ( German Petrus Cnemiander ), who already opened the Lion pharmacy in 1573 [1] . Thanks to the privilege, the Lion pharmacy remained the only one in the city for more than 200 years [2] ; the second pharmacy in Cottbus - Adler Pharmacy ( German: Adler-Apotheke ) - opened only in 1797 [1] .
For many years, sales of drugs here were carried out only through a window; visitors were able to enter the pharmacy only after 1800 [2] .
Before the pharmacy was nationalized in 1951, 19 owners have been replaced since its inception [1] .
After in 1980, the complex of buildings of Altmarkt Square was recognized as a historical monument, it was decided to organize a museum in the Lion pharmacy. Restoration work began in 1984, and already on June 1, 1989, the Nizhny Luzhitsky Pharmaceutical Museum ( German: Niederlausitzer Apothekenmuseum ) was opened to visitors [1] .
Over the years, the museum’s collections grew, and in 2002 it was decided to raise its status from local to federal level, and the museum acquired its current name [1] .
Collection
The museum exposition is presented on a total area of 400 m² [1] . The museum’s collection contains pharmacy furniture, tools, historical documents [2] , as well as about 750 original pharmaceutical products produced by the GDR [3] .
Also in the pharmacy is stored a herbarium of about 400 plants, which began to be collected in 1850 [2] .
Architecture
The baroque facade of the museum overlooks Altmarkt Square; his pediment is crowned by a statue of Hygye . The interiors are decorated with pharmacy furniture of different historical periods, starting in 1870 [2] .
