Biography
Born October 24, 1958 in Moscow.
He studied at the School of Young Geographer at Moscow State University, in 1980 he graduated with honors from the Faculty of Geography of Moscow State University, specializing in Oceanology, then he studied at graduate school there.
In 1983 - defended his thesis on the topic: "Antarctic intermediate waters in the oceans."
In 1996 - defended his doctoral dissertation, topic: "The role of the water masses of the oceans in the global freshwater balance and heat transfer."
In 1998 - awarded the academic title of professor.
Since 1983 - works at the Department of Oceanology, Faculty of Geography, Moscow State University: Deputy Dean for Research (1999–2015), Head of the Department of Oceanology (since 2006), Dean of the Department of Geography (since 2015).
In 2006, he was elected a corresponding member of the Russian Academy of Sciences in the Department of Earth Sciences.
Scientific activity
For the first time, he quantitatively described the ocean link of the global hydrological cycle, established the reasons for the formation of the “inter-ocean conveyor”, determined the role of the main water masses of the World Ocean in the global freshwater balance and heat transfer. Member of 8 ocean expeditions in the Atlantic Ocean under the international programs WOCE (“Global Ocean Circulation Experiment”) and CLIVAR (“Climate Change”).
Under his leadership, 2 candidate dissertations were defended, the author of more than 120 scientific and educational works, including 3 monographs and teaching aids [2] .
