Scientific career
Participated in a mathematical circle at the Palace of Pioneers under the direction of Zalgaller .
In 1947 , after graduating from high school, he entered the Faculty of Mathematics and Mechanics of the Leningrad University. He graduated in four years and was left in graduate school of Leningrad State University .
Academician Yu. G. Reshetnyak was A. D. Aleksandrov .
In 1954, Yu. G. Reshetnyak defended his thesis "On the length and rotation of the curve and on the surface area" and was sent to work at the Leningrad Branch of the Mathematical Institute. V.A. Steklova (now the St. Petersburg Branch of the MI RAS).
In 1957, the Soviet government decided to create a new research unit in the center of Russia - the Siberian Branch of the Academy of Sciences . Yu. G. Reshetnyak, among the first young scientists, responded to the call of the organizers of the SB - academicians M. A. Lavrent'ev , S. L. Sobolev and S. A. Khristianovich - and at the end of 1957 with his family moved to Novosibirsk , where from December 1 1957 became one of the first employees of the Institute of Mathematics (now named after S. L. Sobolev) of the Siberian Branch of the USSR Academy of Sciences (USSR Academy of Sciences).
In Novosibirsk, Yu. G. Reshetnyak continued the research begun in Leningrad. The original style of research on the border between analysis and geometry , characteristic of Yuri Grigorievich, was finally formed.
In Novosibirsk, in 1960, at the Joint Scientific Council of the Siberian Division of the Academy of Sciences Yu. G. Reshetnyak defended his doctoral thesis on the topic “Isothermal coordinates in two-dimensional manifolds of bounded curvature” (the main result was obtained in post-graduate studies at Leningrad State University).
At the Institute of Mathematics, Yuri Grigorievich created a scientific division, which soon became a large department of analysis and geometry.
In 1966, at the suggestion of Academician A.I. Maltsev, he was elected head of the department of mathematical analysis of the Novosibirsk State University , which had previously been headed by M.A. Lavrentyev and A.A. Lyapunov .
Awards
Scientific and pedagogical activity of Yu. G. Reshetnyak was highly appreciated. In 1980 he was awarded the honorary title "Honored Worker of Science", in 1981 he was elected a corresponding member of the USSR Academy of Sciences in the department of mathematics, and in 1987 he became a full member in the same Department, in 2000 Yu. G. Reshetnyak received the prize . NI Lobachevsky , awarded by the Russian Academy of Sciences.
Yu. G. Reshetnyak was elected a foreign member of the Finnish Academy of Sciences in 1996 and an honorary member of the Moscow Mathematical Society in 1997 . He was awarded the Order "Badge of Honor" and medals, in 1999 he was awarded the government medal of the Order "For Services to the Fatherland" II degree [1] .
Pedagogical activity
Yu. G. Reshetnyak has been working at the Novosibirsk State University since its foundation. Yuri Grigorievich's many years of activity associated with the formulation and improvement of the modern course of mathematical analysis has greatly contributed to the formation of the concept of education at a young university, which quickly gained a solid reputation as a high-class center for the training of mathematicians.
Lectures by Yu.G. Reshetnyak, his numerous textbooks on modern sections of analysis and on difficult chapters of the basic course have been popular with students and teachers both at NSU and at other leading universities in the country for more than three decades. Yu. G. Reshetnyak prepared a textbook "Course of mathematical analysis in 4 books."
