Biography
Isidor Boretsky was born on October 1, 1911 in the village of Ostrovets (on the territory of modern Ternopil Oblast of Ukraine). He studied at the Terebovlya and Ternopil gymnasiums. In 1932-1936 he studied theology at the Theological Academy in Lviv. In 1936–1938, he continued his education at the St. Andrew’s College in Munich [1] .
On July 17, 1938, he was ordained to the priesthood by Bishop Dionysius (Nyāradi) . In the same year he emigrated to Canada. On January 17, 1948, he was appointed Apostolic Exarch of Eastern Canada for the Greek Catholics with the elevation of the titular bishop Amantunta. On May 27, 1948, Bishop Basil (Ladik), headed by Bishops Konstantin (Bogachevsky) and Neil (Savarin), led the episcopal consecration.
On November 3, 1956, Boretsky was appointed by the Pope Pius XII of the Bishop of Toronto of the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church. In 1979, he became one of the co-founders of the religious society of the Ukrainian Greek-Catholics "Saint Sophia". The bishop participated in the meetings of the Second Vatican Council [1] .
Boretsky repeatedly organized the provision of financial and humanitarian assistance to victims in Ukraine, in particular, to the victims of the accident at the Chernobyl nuclear power plant. He also supported financially the gymnasium in Terebovlya, in which he had once studied.
On June 16, 1998, Pope John Paul II accepted his resignation in connection with his attaining old age. In 2002, the President of Ukraine, Leonid Kuchma, awarded the Bishop a national Order of Merit, III degree. Boretsky died in Toronto on July 23, 2003. [2]
