Video8 is an analog format of oblique-line video recording onto an 8-mm tape developed by Sony . Introduced in 1985 . It was used in household video cameras . It is characterized by high quality video and sound relative to VHS and VHS-C , the main competitors at that time. It has a horizontal sharpness of 250 TV lines at a field frequency of 50 Hz . The frequency range of the sound channel is 20-20 000 Hz, the dynamic range is 50 dB . Such parameters are achieved by recording an audio signal on a 1.5 MHz subcarrier with frequency modulation .
Hi8
In 1989, the Hi8 analog format was introduced using similar cassettes, which, due to improvements in the magnetic layer, made it possible to achieve higher recording quality. Horizontal image clarity - about 420 TV lines. Hi8 format was actively used and was popular until the end of the 90s.
Digital8
In 1998, Sony introduced the new Digital8 format to the market, in which digital recording of image and sound is performed on a conventional Hi8 (or Digital8) format cassette. Video resolution - up to 500 TV lines. The tape speed increased one and a half times, so only 2 hours and 20 minutes of digital recording is placed on a Hi8 two-hour cassette, and 40 minutes on a one-hour cassette.
