Currently, the club holds the 117th season in the top division of the championship of England, which is a record among all English clubs. The club also became the champion of England 9 times, which is the fourth result among English clubs. Everton has been playing continuously in the top division of English football since 1954 and is one of the founding clubs of the Premier League in 1992 .
Everton was founded in 1878 and is one of the founding clubs of the Football League of England in 1888 . They won their first toffee title in the 1890/91 season. The latest Everton trophy is the 1995 FA Cup .
The head coach of the team is Marc Silva , who took this position on May 31, 2018 after the resignation of Sam Allardyce . The current captain of the team is Sheimus Coleman , who replaced Phil Yagelka who left the club in 2019.
History
Club Foundation
Everton was founded in 1878 at the Anglican Church of St. Domingo in the Liverpool Everton area [2] . Beginning in 1876 , parishioners of the church played cricket in the summer, but it was impossible to play it in the winter, so they turned their eyes to football. The club was initially called St. Domingo's Football Club , but soon began to attract the interest of people living not only near the church, which is why a decision was made at a meeting at the Queen's Head Hotel in November 1879 the renaming of the club in Everton [2] .
Everton played their first matches on the Stanley Park field, but when the number of spectators attending the club's matches began to grow rapidly, the club was forced to move to a new stadium, and in 1882 it became Priori Road. However, after some time, the owner of the field, who did not like the fans making too much noise during the match days, asked the team to leave him, and club president John Houlding rented a plot of land on Anfield Road from his friend John Orrel for a small amount. The club held its first match at Anfield on September 28, 1884, against Earlstown Club and won 5-0.
Soccer League Foundation
In 1888, Everton became one of the founders of the Football League [2] . The first season was not very successful for the team and Everton took only eighth place, but the very next year Everton became the second, and even a year later , the club became the champion of England for the first time in its history.
Meanwhile, Houlding, who by that time was already the owner of the stadium, began to try more and more to cash in on Everton, increasing the cost of renting a stadium club [3] . As a result of one of the meetings of the football club, it was decided that Houlding would be fired, and Everton would leave Anfield and move to Goodison Park . Houlding and Orrel, left with the stadium but without a club, decided to create a new club - Liverpool . Everton played their last match at Anfield on April 18, 1892 with Bolton .
After moving to Goodison Park, Everton managed to reach the FA Cup finals four times before World War I - in 1893 , 1897 , 1906 and 1907 . But the trophy submitted to Everton only once. On April 21, 1906, Everton was able to beat Newcastle United 1-0. The other three finals were lost to Wolverhampton , Aston Villa and Sheffield Wensday , respectively.
Everton managed to win the second national title in the 1914/15 season, which was the last before the First World War.
Years Between Wars
In 1925, Everton was replenished with 18-year-old striker William Dean , better known as Dixie Dean, who later became one of the greatest scorers in the history of English football . For a talented footballer, Everton paid 3000 pounds to neighbors from Tranmere Rovers [4] . In his first season for Everton 1925/26, the striker scored 32 goals in 38 games.
Before the second season in the “ toffee ” Dean had an accident on his motorcycle. After the accident, Dixie was in a coma for 36 hours; the doctors said that he had very few chances to pursue a career, but Dean was able to refute these allegations, and quickly recovered. Moreover, in the 1927/28 season he managed to set a performance record, still unbeaten - 60 goals per season [4] . That season, Everton managed to become the champion of England for the third time in its history.
In the 1929/30 season , Everton first flew into the second division , but after a season returned to the first. The fourth championship title came to Everton in the very first year after returning to the elite - in the 1931/32 season.
In 1933, Everton won the FA Cup. For the first time on the T-shirts of the players, numbers were first used. Dean performed at number 9. Since then, the “nine” on the back has become synonymous with a scoring striker, both nationally and internationally, in football.
Almost until the end of the 1930s, Everton did not achieve much success, as the team had a generational change. And in the 1938/39 season, “Everton” with Joe Mercer , TJ Jones and Tommy Lawton in the composition again won the championship of England. Laughton, 19, scored 34 goals that season. But the Second World War began , putting an end to the team, which could achieve very much [4] .
1940s and 1950s
The worst decade in Everton’s history is believed to be the 1990s . However, this is not so - the post-war period was even worse [5] . In 1946, the 1939 champion team quickly broke up. Tommy Lawton was sold at Chelsea , Joe Mercer at Arsenal . Of the previous leaders in the team, only goalkeeper Ted Sagar remained .
In 1948, the team coach Theo Kelly resigned and his former team player Cliff Britton was appointed in his place, under whose leadership Everton flew into the second division for the second time in history [5] . This time, “Everton” took 3 seasons to return. Since then, “ butterscotch ” invariably appear in the top division of English football.
The Age of Harry Catericus
The 1960s are seen by many fans as the golden era of a football club. After the crisis of the 1950s, the team in 1961 was led by Harry Catterick of Sheffield Wensday. In the first full season for Katerik, Everton conceded fewer goals than any other league team and ended up in fourth place.
The next season, “ Toffee ” lost only 6 matches out of 42 and took the title of champion of England for the sixth time. Especially vividly in that line-up of Everton stood out a duet of strikers Roy Vernon - Alex Young , who scored 46 goals for two. Other significant players on that team were Billy Bingham and Brian Labon .
In 1966, Everton managed to win the FA Cup. During the final match with Sheffield Wensday, Everton lost 0–2, but still managed to win 3–2 [6] . Two years later, Everton had a chance to repeat this achievement, but lost to West Bromwich in the final.
Two years later, in the 1969/70 season , Everton once again became the country's champion, 9 points ahead of Leeds United, the closest pursuer. Everton did not succeed in securing success: in the next four championships, “ butterscotch ” took places in the middle of the tournament table. Soon Katerik's health deteriorated greatly, and he left the post of head coach of the team, moving to the post of administrator [6] .
The Age of Billy Bingham and Gordon Lee
After Harry Cateric left, Billy Bingham led the team. In the first season under his leadership, 1974/75 , Everton confidently went to the championship, but several unexpected loss of points threw the team to fourth place. The next two seasons were relatively unsuccessful for Everton (eleventh and ninth place), and in 1977 Bingham was fired. Gordon Lee took the team, but he also could not achieve high results with the team.
The Age of Howard Kendall
Before the 1981/82 season, the former Everton player Howard Kendall returned to the team as head coach, previously only led the Blackburn Rovers and brought him out of the third division into the second [7] .
The first 2 years, with Kendall at the helm, Everton spent at the middle team level, taking eighth and seventh places respectively. Many expected much more from that team, and the 1983/84 season was to be decisive for Kendall’s future prospects at the club. That season began terribly for Everton: 6 victories were won in the first 21 matches. After this beginning, Kendall resigned, but club president Philip Carter did not agree to let Howard go [7] . As it turned out later - not in vain. Already this season, Everton managed to win the FA Cup , reach the League Cup finals , and rise to seventh place in the championship, which was a success after such a disastrous start.
The 1984/85 season was a triumph for Everton. In the championship of England “Everton” became the first, with a huge margin from the second place “Liverpool”, in the FA Cup - reached the finals , where only in extra time lost “ Manchester United ”. In addition, this season the club won the first and currently the only European trophy for itself - the Cup of Cups , on the way to the finals of which the Irish “ USD ”, the Czechoslovak “ Inter ”, the Dutch “ Fortune ” and the Munich “ Bavaria ” were beaten, and in the finale - the Vienna Rapid .
The next season, Everton was to take part in the European Cup , where he was recognized as the main favorite, but the tragedy on Eisel put an end to all the hopes of Everton. The disqualification of English clubs is one of the main disappointments in the history of the Merseyside club. Many toffee fans still cannot forgive this for their Liverpool neighbors.
The 1985/86 season was relatively unsuccessful for Everton - the second place in the championship (after Liverpool) and the defeat in the Cup final left the Howard Kendall team without trophies, but a year later the English title returned to Everton.
1990s crisis
Before the start of the 1987/88 season , Kendall left the club and went to Athletic Bilbao . The “ butterscotch ” trainer was appointed by his assistant Colin Harvey [6] . His main achievement in 3.5 years was reaching the FA Cup final in 1989 , where Everton lost to Liverpool.
The beginning of the 1990/91 season turned out to be a failure for Everton and, as a result, Colin Harvey was fired on October 31 , but soon returned to the club in his old capacity as assistant Howard Kendall, who, without gaining laurels in Spain and Manchester City , decided return to your home club.
Everton's results were declining: ninth in the 1990/91 season, twelfth in 1991/92 , thirteenth in 1992/93 ... In addition, financial problems did not give Everton fans confidence in the future [6] .
December 4, 1993 Howard Kendall leaves Everton. Welshman Mike Walker from Norwich City is becoming his successor, but he is also unable to get Everton out of the crisis. Everton ends the 1993/94 season with the seventeenth, and the next season starts again with a series of setbacks - the first victory was won in only 15 matches. Then the club’s management decides to dismiss Walker and invite Joe Royle to his place, who, when he was a player, played for “ toffee ” [8] .
First, Royle instilled in Everton a defensive style of play [8] , so the club managed to stay in the Premier League, taking 15th place. In addition, Everton managed to win the last trophy for itself today - the FA Cup 1995. In the final, “ Toffee ” with a score of 1-0 outplayed Manchester United .
Before the 1995/96 season, Everton managed to strengthen quite well. The team was supplemented by Andrey Kanchelskis , Nick Barmby , Gary Speed , which helped Everton to take the sixth place, compared to other results of the team this decade. However, in the next season, the team again faced the struggle for survival. Only a draw in the last round with Coventry City allowed the team to remain in the elite [8] .
The next season was marked by the next arrival in the Howard Kendall club. This time he worked in the club for season 1, in which the team managed to stay in the Premier League only by the difference in goals scored and conceded. [7]
Scottish specialist Walter Smith was invited to the team. Under his leadership, the team of the 3rd season fought for “survival”, invariably taking places in the lower half of the tournament table [7] .
Beginning of the 21st Century
The club's management ran out of patience in March 2002 , when Everton flew out of the cup, losing to Middlesbrough , and was also on the verge of relegation from the Premier League. As a result, Smith was fired, and David Moyes , a young Preston North End coach, was invited in his place, leading the club to a safe fifteenth place. [8]
The next season, “Everton” unexpectedly for many finished seventh. Most of all of that Everton squad stood out young forward Wayne Rooney [8] .
The championship of England 2003/04 turned out to be unsuccessful for Everton, but taking the “saving” seventeenth place, the “ butterscotch ” still managed to stay in the Premier League [9] .
The best in the first decade of the 21st century for Everton was the 2004/05 season . Before its start, the team was joined by Australian Tim Cahill , who became the leader of the “ butterscotch ” for many years to come. Wayne Rooney was sold at Manchester United for 23 million pounds, which did not prevent the “ blue ” from taking a record fourth place over the years [9] .
The 2005/06 season was not very successful for Everton: in the championship the club took only eleventh place, and in the Champions League and UEFA Cup were knocked out in the early stages by Villarreal and Dynamo Bucharest respectively.
In the 2006/07 English Championship , Everton finished seventh and qualified for the UEFA Cup .
In the 2007/08 championship, the “ blue ” went on for a long time in the first four, but in the end they nevertheless dropped to fifth place. In the UEFA Cup , Everton managed to successfully hold the group stage, where all matches were won, including with the future winner of the tournament - St. Petersburg Zenit , and matches of the 1/16 finals with Brann , but in the 1/8 finals in the penalty shootout Everton lost to Fiorentina .
The following year, the club reached the final of the FA Cup , where they lost to Chelsea , and in the championship again ended the season on the fifth line of the tournament table.
The 2009/10 season turned out to be extremely uneven for the club. The first lap for Everton was a failure. In the first match, the “ butterscotch ” at Goodison Park lost to Arsenal with a score of 1: 6, and after the first round the team went only in 15th place, 11 points behind the Europa League zone. However, in the second half of the championship, the club managed to defeat the future Chelsea champion and Manchester United vice champion. As a result, Everton took third place on points scored in the second half of the championship. True, the gap was not eliminated and failed, and behind Liverpool by 2 points, the team took eighth place, leaving the club in the 2010/11 season without European cups.
Form

Logo
At the end of the 1937/38 season, Everton’s secretary Theo Kelly , who later became the club’s head coach, decided to design a club tie . It was decided that the color of the tie would be blue , and Kelly was given the task of creating the logo. Kelly worked on it for four months, until the decision to rebuild the Prince Rupert Tower [13] .
The tower has been firmly connected to the Liverpool Everton area since its construction in 1787 . Initially, it served as a prison for petty criminals and a detoxification center . On both sides of the tower are laurel wreaths that symbolize victory and success. The logo below is accompanied by the Latin motto “ Nil Satis Nisi Optimum ”, which means “ Only the best is good enough .”
The logo was first demonstrated in 1939 [13] . He appeared on players' t-shirts later, in 1978 (before that, the abbreviation EFC was depicted on the form) and has gone so far with minor changes.
On May 25, 2013, Everton announced a logo change, but in just two days, more than 14,000 fans had already signed an online petition urging management not to touch the logo. The Nil Satis Nisi Optimum club's motto (“ Only the best is good enough ” translated from Latin) that was present on the logo since 1938, as well as the long-standing Everton symbol — a pair of wreaths that were added in 1978, are missing from the new logo. But Everton listened to its fans and a few days later announced that this emblem would be used only for one season - and only because the new form with this emblem was already put into production.
Nicknames
The most common nickname for Everton is “ Toffee ” ( The Toffees ). It appeared after Everton moved to Goodison Park . The emergence of such a nickname has several explanations. According to one legend, next to the stadium there was a pastry shop selling sweets of the same name , and according to another version, the venue of the club’s meetings was Everton Toffee House [14] .
Everton also has a number of other nicknames. The main club color is blue . This contributed to the emergence of a simple nickname " blue " ( Eng. The Blues ). His other nickname is “ The People's Club ” - “Everton” owes to the former head coach of the team David Moyes , who named the club at his first press conference after being appointed head coach of the club from Liverpool [15] .
Stadium
Everton originally played on the Stanley Park pitch. Gradually, the number of spectators coming to the club's matches grew. By 1882, their number exceeded two thousand, as a result of which Everton moved to Priori Road, but within a year, Anfield became the club’s new stadium. Everton played at Anfield until 1892 , until the club’s president and stadium owner John Houlding decided in his own interests to increase the rental value of the field [3] . Soon after, Everton moved to the new Mair Green Stadium, which was later renamed Goodison Park . John Houlding initiated the emergence of a new club - Liverpool .
Goodison Park was the first football stadium in England [16] . In 1966, the stadium hosted five World Cup matches. No other stadium, with the exception of Wembley , has hosted so many Championship games [16] .
In March 2017, Everton officially announced the redemption of territory in the area of the Bramley-Moore Dock, where it is planned to build a new club stadium with a capacity of 52 thousand people. July 25, 2019 Everton presented the design of the future stadium.
Fans and Derby
Everton has a large number of fans. According to average attendance, the club takes 9th place in England [17] . Most of the club's fans are concentrated in the north-west of England , mainly in Merseyside and Cheshire . In addition, Everton has a large number of fans in North Wales and Ireland . There are also a large number of fan clubs around the world, for example, in the USA , Australia , Germany , Hong Kong , Indonesia , Russia , Norway , Lebanon and Thailand [18] .
Everton’s main rival is Liverpool . Matches involving these teams are called the Merseyside Derby . The rivalry is connected with the conflict between the owner of Anfield and Everton officials, as a result of which Liverpool appeared, and Everton was forced to move out of Anfield [3] . In addition, religious contradictions are sometimes attributed to clubs. Everton is called the Catholic Club, Liverpool is called Protestant . However, this contradiction is far-fetched and not true [19] .
In addition to Liverpool, Everton fans consider Manchester United and Tranmere Rovers to be their most important rivals [20] .
Everton has supporters among famous people. So fans of “ toffee ” are musicians Sir Paul McCartney [21] , Pete Best [22] , Nicola Roberts , rapper Nas , actors Sylvester Stallone [23] , Dolph Lundgren , Judy Dench , John Hurt , Ian Hart , Amanda Holden , Jennifer Ellison [24] , tennis player John McEnroe , snooker player John Higgins , mixed martial artist Eddie Alvarez , boxer Tony Bellew . In 2015, Stallone and Bellew starred together in the boxing movie Creed: The Rocky Legacy , the first filming work on which took place at the club’s home stadium during the break of the match against West Brom , as part of the 22nd round of the Premier League season 2014/15 [ 25] .
