Biography
Francisco Collon was born in Saint-Rambert-en-Bugey, 50 kilometers northeast of Lyon. He was the youngest child in a poor large family [1] [2] . In the 1920s, he studied at the Lamartine College in Belle [1] . At the age of 17, he went to Lyon, where he at first interrupted by casual work, gradually got on his feet and at the age of 35 acquired a small company called Chimicolor [1] [2] .
Political career
In the 1959 municipal elections he was elected municipal councilor, since 1965 he became deputy mayor of the 6th district of Lyon [1] [2] . In 1968 he was elected to the Senate of France , in the same year he became a member of the council of the newly created Lyon City Community [1] [2] . Since 1971 - Deputy Mayor of Lyon for Economic Affairs [1] .
On December 5, 1976, a few days after the death of the mayor of Lyon, Louis Pradel , the municipal council elected Francisco Collon as the new mayor. In the same year he became president of the Lyon City Community. In March 1977, Colon reaffirmed his authority by winning the municipal elections and remained mayor for over twelve years. During the reign of Francisco Collon in Lyon, numerous projects were implemented: a new bridge was built across the Rhone near the Tête d'Or park , the new Lyon-Par-Dieu train station, the Eurexpo exhibition center, the residential and business district of Cité Internacional, metro construction continued , the headquarters of Interpol and the procurement office of SNCF moved to the city, the construction of the Great Lyon Mosque was started [1] [2] .
In 1979, he was elected to the European Parliament , but did not re-run for the next elections in 1984 [3] . In 1989, he lost the municipal election to Michel Noir and was forced to resign as mayor of Lyon after three terms, but Noir gave Colon a "comforting" post of honorary mayor [1] . In 1995, he did not stand for the Senate, in which he served since 1968 [4] .
Francisco Collon died July 24, 2009 at the age of 98 years [1] [2] .
