Biography

Origin and family

Friedrich Saldern was born in Prignitz in a family of Saxon nobility. Friedrich Christoph Saldern was born in the old Saxon noble family of Saldern . At the time of his birth in 1719, his father, Otto Ludolf von Saldern (June 26, 1686 - April 5, 1753) was the commander of the Kolobrzeg battalion. His mother was Lucretia Tugendreich von Holzendorf (1700 - 1728). After her death, his father married a second time [2] .

Friedrich Saldern was married three times:

  • June 1, 1748 married Sophie Antoinette Katarina von Tettau (1720-1759) - ladies from the environment of Queen Elizabeth Christina and daughter of Lieutenant Colonel Karl von Tettau;
  • January 5, 1763 married Wilhelmine von Borke (April 6, 1742 - May 15, 1766);
  • In 1767 he married the sister of his second wife, Helena Bernhardine von Borke (1743 - 1831).

In total, Friedrich Saldern had two children [3] .

Military career

In the Prussian army in 1735. Due to his high growth, he was transferred to the guard in 1739. When the regiment in which Saldern served was dissolved after Frederick II ascended the throne. Saldern was transferred to the second battalion of the new guard regiment as the first lieutenant. During the battle of Leyten, Friedrich Christoph commanded the battalion, also participated in the battle of Hochkirch , after which he received the rank of major general . During the Battle of Torgau, Friedrich Saldern and Wiehard Joachim Heinrich von Möllendorf managed to turn the battle in their favor. However, the following year, King Frederick the Great ordered to sell the castle of Hubertusburg , after which the king dismissed him from service. After the armistice, the king returned him to service and appointed him inspector of troops in Magdeburg . In 1766 he received the rank of lieutenant general [2] .

The rest of his life, Friedrich Saldern studied military science and wrote works on it. In 1851, the name Friedrich Saldern was engraved on the equestrian statue of Frederick the Great [2] .
