Biography

Born in the family of a carpenter. In 1887-1891 studied history at the Faculty of Philosophy of Charles University of Prague. During his studies, he was one of the organizers of the Czech student magazine Časopis českého studentstva . He later became a journalist. In 1905-1909 edited the magazine Pokroková revue .

An active participant in the reform movement in Czechoslovakia at the end of the 19th century. Energetically defended social issues, tried to unite young students and workers. After the collapse of the movement, he was one of the founders and soul of the progressive radical movement.

He was one of the four founders of the anarchist movement Omladina , uniting young representatives of the labor movement , for which he was imprisoned in 1893, where he spent 18 months.

In 1897, he was among the founders and chairman of the radically progressive party, which emerged from the social reformist center of the movement associated with democratically minded youngsters . Supporters of the party opposed any agreements with the clericals , the historical nobility and the old clergy , admitted the possibility of cooperation with the Social Democrats, actively fought for the introduction of universal suffrage, women's equality, etc., sought to integrate the Czech Republic, Moravia and Silesia.

At the end of the 1880s, together with A.P. Vesely, A. Rashin, V. Klofach, was one of the most famous representatives of the progressive movement, the social base of which was students, young workers, and the intelligentsia beginning their activities.

From 1907 to 1911 - member of the Czechoslovak Party of People's Democracy (Narodne demokratická Strana).

He was elected deputy of the lower house of the Austrian imperial council - the Reichsrat . In the years 1918-1920. - Member of the Revolutionary National Assembly of Czechoslovakia . In 1920-1935 - Member of the National Assembly of Czechoslovakia .
