In her childhood, Donna was repeatedly checked by ear, but doctors found that she heard even better than ordinary people, although she ignored her parents. In 1991, she was diagnosed with autism and nervous system disorders. Later, she wrote four autobiographical works about herself and her illness: “Nobody Nowhere: An Extraordinary Biography of an Autistic Girl” (published in the UK in 1992, was on the New York Times bestseller list in early 1993) [2] , continued in 1994 year - “Someone Somewhere”, which tells how she began to teach others and how her life changed after the first book, “Like a Color for the Blind,” and recorded two musical solos of the album “Nobody Nowhere” and “Mutations” .
Biography
Donna (nee Keane) was born in Melbourne in 1963. She has two brothers - the eldest, James, and the youngest, Tom. became a street artist. Donna’s father had bipolar disorder, her mother suffered from alcoholism and was subjected to physical and emotional abuse [3] . In 1965, Donna was attributed to psychotics, also noting her hearing impairment. According to her own recollections, she communicated using gestures and objects, although she actually heard perfectly. By the age of nine, she had two personalities, rebellious and kind, while at the same time it turned out that Donna was allergic to milk and gluten. At 16, the girl left home and worked in a factory. Only at age 25 she found out about her current diagnosis [4] .
Despite severe sensory and neurological impairments, Donna is a highly functional autist who graduated from La Trobe University and received a bachelor of arts degree in education in 1990. She became a teacher. and then acted as a speaker and adviser on autism. In 2000, she married Chris Samuel. In 2011, she was diagnosed with breast cancer.
Donna died of cancer in 2017 [5] .
